Am I right in thinking that you can put a TV aerial inside your loft and still get a decent signal?

the aerial i have in the loft does not work with freeview, so got a £5 aerial stuck on a couple of whisky bottle boxes, it works better

I have just moved the one in the loft to avoid a recently installed water tank.

I read up about loft installation here:

All seems fine now after an auto DVB tune (TV)

You need a Log Periodic TV Aerial:

For alignment, I used this:

The aerial is connected to a distribution system:

It depends on the available signal in your area. Put your postcode into this site and also tick the 'I'm in the aerial trade' box

http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/

This will give details of which local transmitter you are on and the expected signal strength. Unless you have a good signal a loft aerial will not work well.

I used Google Earth (to get a bearing to the nearest TV mast) then my iPhone's compass to set the aerial to that bearing.

As has been said, there's no loss of signal in the loft.

There are significant losses involved when putting an aerial inside a loft and it is not recommended.

There is no one on these forums who can tell you if your installation would work or not. As others have said, it is totally dependant on the available signal around your property as to whether it will work inside. It doesn't even depend on distance as every transmitter has a different power rating that will effect the distance it can work over.

It is not recommended, but you will have to suck it and see.

Not much help, but don't get mislead.

Not necessarily. The type of aerial needed is entirely dependant on the area he's living in. Log periodic is only really suitable for a high-signal area where theres no alternative transmitters which it may also pick up.

As CJS posted, Use the digitalUK checker to see which transmitter and aerial type is best for your house.

Personally though, I wouldn't bother with a loft aerial. Chances for signal degradation are too high, Pointless anywhere other than a high signal area. Plus by the time you've paid out (Retail prices) for an Aerial, Mounting equipment and cable and the time it'll take you to set it up - You may aswell just of paid someone who knows what they're doing to fit a decent quality aerial on the roof in the first place. Don't forget, Even with a new aerial if your still using old rubbish cable you'll still have signal loss anyway - May aswell replace the whole system while your at it.
