Hi all, 20 months ago i purchased a brand new lcd tv, all has been fine until wednesday morning when i woke up to turn it on and only 3/4 of the screen was working. The left hand side was just blurry and flickering. Have phoned where i brought it from which is a big company, always on tv with this deal and that deal so its not a mickey mouse firm, Only answers i get from them is they want me to pay £139 just to send an engineer out to have a look and then i have to pay for any parts required. Now the tv was £900 and as i say is only 20 months old, I have a friend that keeps raving on about the sales of goods act and they have a duty to sort it for no charge as of how much i payed, and its not fit for purpose etc, however im not sure as it has not got four wheels im stumped. Any advice from some one who may know would be fantastic,

Sorry for the essay,I know you peeps dont like a lot of reading, espec on a sunday

Many thanks Garry

Personally, I would probably stick it in the back of my car and take it to the place you purchased it from (assuming you have proof of purchase?) and do as your mate suggests and quote the SOGA and 'fit for purpose'.

A tv should not fail in less than 2 years - it's not a disposable item.

If they try to fob you off that you should contact the manufacturer, just tell them that your contract is with them, not Samsung/Panasonic/whoever.

Kick up a fuss and don't back down. If you can do it just before they shut, so much the better wink

Most main manufacturers will supply parts FOC but you will proberbly end up paying for fitting.

You have upto 5 years in England with a "Premium product".
If you'd got it for £150 then it would be tough luck.
Trading standards will help you out if needs be.

This. And don't forget, proof of purchase could just be a bank statement showing payment, not necessarily a reciept.

Evening all, have been to the shop and after being told tough luck and pay up, managed to speak to the manager who was a lot more helpful after he see i was holding 23 peices of white paper with soga all over them, i now have an engineer coming to my home to inspect my tv for free. im awaiting a call in the morning. For those who asked its a samsung tv but came from i high street store. They want to check there is no accidental damage which is fine as i tend not to play cricket in the front room. I have also recorded a video of the tv playing up as sods law it will be fine when they come.

Thanks for the replys peeps, i shall keep you all updated when they try and blame it on something else.

Ok so the next morning i got a call from them saying they cant do an engineers report for free, so ive had to pay for a engineer to come and have a look. So today was that day, Knock knock, come in, heres the remote, yep thats fooked love, is it under garantee? Bye. Wow £69 for 2 mins work, now got to wait for him to do his report and see where we go from here. Does anybody know where i go from here? The tv is classed as irrepairable, can they now give me a tv that is not as expensive as mine or can i demand the same brand and same price?

Many thanks Garry

Good luck and I hope you get it fixed for free.

They have made you pay for an engineers report and I feel that they will now politely decline to repair your TV for free.

My little one put 16p in the service slot on our TV. Comet had an offer on their website £99 for unlimited labour and the first £150 parts.

Chap came and replaced one board which didnt work and said we needed the tuner board which costs £250 so will cost me an extra £100.

Told him not to bother and take the fitted part out and got a £50 refund. I brought the tuner board off eBay for £23. It came wrapped in a plastic bag and I thought it had no chance of working!

Took the rear of the TV off and fitted the board, 5 screws and a couple of clip on wires. Turned the TV on and it worked perfectly ever since.

You should have taken it to a local independent repair shop for a report. (£30-£40)

Anyway, along with the report quote the sale of goods act 1979 & also the 2 year EU warranty.

If it is beyond economical reapir they will probably work it out pro rata to what use you have had of it & settle with you (in store vouchers but push for a cheque/bank transfer)

The above is what we did last year with "Ruby Murrays"

& then bought a new one from Richer Sounds with a 5 year warranty to save any hassle

Good luck

Just an update, tv now been swapped, although thet tried to fob me off with a tv that was £300 cheaper i stuck to my guns and managed to after a few arguments get a new tv that i liked. I now have a good working tv again with a fresh 12 month garantee, Funnily enough they didnt try to get me to take the extended warranty, maybe because i proved that its not really needed.

Beware fellow pistonheaders, dont be fooled if your tv breaks after 12 months, they still have to help you.
