Turf

Starting on clearing some of the garden. Some of the borders will have overgrown bushes pulled and I'd like to turf over the ground that's left.Is ok to put turf down at this time of year?

Not really, you need growing season so I would wait till April.

Winter is a good time to lay turf providing the ground conditions are favourable ie not frozen or waterlogged, the main benefit being you should`nt have to worry about watering it and by Spring it should be nicely established.

You want to stay off wet soil this time of year, you'll just destroy the structure and cause future problems.

Way too early - there are still frosts to come.

March/April I'd say.

Grass seed can work remarkably well, and is much cheaper.

Worth pointing out that grass only grows above a certain temperature, 47F IIRC.

Simple answer, No.

Leave it till late winter early spring.

The top will not grow much at this time of year but it will put down a root structure and as I said in my earlier post it will be well established by mowing time, as a landscape gardener I always turf in winter.

Totally agree, get everything else sorted then you but have worry about running a wheelbarrow over your nice new lawn.
