This is not a good time for this to happen on my 2002 S60. The engine is very low on oil as a result of an oil leak and I have to travel to the NEC every day next Thursday to Sunday!

It has snapped at the handle end. I've tried pulling on the inner cable very hard with a good pliers and it won't open. I can see nothing through the grille that I could tug at or dismantle.

I'm really at a loss to work out how I can open it principally to get some oil in.

Help!! Any ideas please?

Can you get in to the bonnet catch from underneath? As in reach up past the rad and unscrew it? (don't know if they can be screwed off mind you!)

Have you thought of calling your breakdown service (AA, RAC, Green Flag etc) ?
At worse consider breaking the plastic grill so you can get your hand inside. A secondhand grill is going to be a lot cheaper than some of the other options - hire car, seized engine, train / taxi fares, garage callout etc.

I'm not sure it's a breakdown as such is it?

On my TD5 Discovery the cable has snapped. There is a plastic shroud below the release mechanism that I was able free off with a long screw driver. I can then use this screw driver to hold the shroud open and with another long screw driver I can push the release mechanism. All this is done from below, through the grill.

Thought I'd post this incase there's a similar work-around for the Volvo.

Get someone to bounce the bonnet while you tug your wire

That could be a good plan for tomorrow. Thank you.

Don't forget to video it

Apparently people tugging their wire is popular in some circles
