I've always found the best is to go to mother care and they'll advise you on what car seats ect are best for your car... My cousin went there and they refused to put particular car seats into his Honda Accord as it was deemed as "too unsafe".

We've just bought a Recaro young sport. Really good seat that grows with the child and looks nice into the bargain.

It's not the cheapest, but should save us having to buy another seat in the future....

Give us a clue OP, is he going from a newborn baby seat to a proper chair or from a proper chair to a booster seat? More simply, what age is he?

Britax without a shadow of a doubt. Our little guy was always extremely comfortable in his, plus when my wife I broke the ISOFIX on it a few years ago, we took it back to the factory & they swapped the seat out FOC with no questions asked. Excellent customer service

We're using a Britax for our daughter's first car seat, and as she's slowly approaching the 19lb 8oz change over weight, we were looking at getting a Britax Evolva 123 Plus for the family Focus. We've ended up buying a Maxi Cosi Axiss, as the seat rotates 90 degrees to make it easier to get the little un out. Normally £210, but we got it for £90 from Amazon.

I'll probably get a Recaro for my car, as I'm a tart!

I read a test somewhere a few months ago, and it seems there are major difference in how safe different brands are. On my iPhone at the mo, will try to find the link when I get the chance. Think it was autoexpress though.

Please don't forget that the minimum change over weight is 21 lbs & not before.

+1 Just bought it for my car. My wife has the Maxi Cosi Axiss in her car (the seat swivels to face the door - making it easier to put him in & take him out).

Maxi Cosi perform very well in crash tests and the cabrio model is pretty much the only seat to get a 5 out of 5 star rating.

Not sure what age it goes upto though but the rest of their range also score highly in tests.

The Axiss states that the change over is 9kg, which is 19.8lb. Is that recommendation from Britax, or a Safety Agency of some sort? I'm not arguing by the way, I'm genuinely interested as it's the safety of my daughter at risk. My daughter is quite "skinny" for her age - i.e. she's as tall as my nephew who is also 9 months, but is 5lb heavier than her. I think her size/height will become an issue in the current seat before she reaches 21lbs.

Hi,

It's purely based on the fact that most children below this weight can not support the weight of their own necks due to no being developed enough & this is dangerous if sitting in a forward facing seat. If a child under this weight can sit up un-aided & support the weight of it's own neck, there isn't a problem. My opologies, I should have been more specific. I know you are not trying to dissagree with me & I am more than happy to give advice if needed. thumbup

My daughter has been able to sit unaided for quite a while, and she's only 16lb something now. A lot of our friends' kids can crawl, and stand, at a similar age/weight. I realise she'll be gaining strength and developing her muscles, and as she gets heavier, this will increase her body's ability to cope with the G force and stresses of an accident. I won't be rushing into changing car seats, we'll leave it as long as possible. My wife is struggling to lift the daughter/seat combo into the car, so the sooner the better!

Thanks for the information/advice.

Back on topic - OP, best bet is to go to a large independent stockist, and try several out. Seek advise on car compatibility, and look for safety, weight of seat if getting moved between cars, strap comfort, ease of fitting and unstrapping, etc.

Always glad to help. Rear facing is the safest option but not always practical.
You seem to understand the reasons behind this & I have no doubts that you will sit you're child forward facing when ready. Please don't hesitate in asking anything regarding child restraints as I am always willing to help (I can give advice about any child restraint & not just Britax). biggrin

What's your opinion on Isofix vs. seatbelt mounted? Obviously Isofix is convenient for fitment, but is it much safer?

Isofix is by far easier to install but it would be wrong for me to say isofix is "safer"

Seats fitted correctly with the seat belt are perfectly safe in my opinion and no different to isofix.

Being a new dad I can see the advantages of Isofix in that a tired or distracted parent is less likely to incorrectly fit an Isofix chair when compared to a fiddly Seatbelt chair. The chair for our new born is seatbelt fix as it goes on the pram and Silvercross don't do an Isofix mount, but I was surprised that the Isofix mount option added approx. £100 or even more to most seats.

The chair will only be used for a year, but the next seat will be Isofix.
