Bereavement Flight Rates

Guys,

Due to the loss of a close family member I need to get over to USA for a funeral. I have heard people mention that airlines will often give 'bereavement rates' as long as you can prove the reason for your trip.

Does this actually happen? Does it make it a lot cheaper?

Any saving would help as otherwise finding a grand in January is never that easy.
