Hi all,

I'm unsure as to whether this post (my first) is in the correct place so appologies in advance if not.

Should you be in the position to hire a roadster type car for a special occasion, gift, weekend hoon etc.... which of the following would be your choice of vehicle.

Porshe Boxster
Lotus Elise
Caterham
Mazda MX5
BMW Z3 / 4

The reason I ask is that I will be opening a hire co based in Dunfermline and would like your opinions on which cars would complement.

Thanks for replying.

Elise or a Caterham imo ...
But I agree with the above - I'd probably hire out a TVR if I had the chance biggrin

Caterham or Elise for me too.

Insurance for Knockhill, given the close proximity to Dunfermline? biggrin

Thanks for the replies so far, I thought originally about having a TVR as they are great cars. As this will be a business then as starter cars I think that running costs, reliability and fuel consumption count against them for now.

For those recommending the Elise and Caterhams, I already have a Boxster and will add another car in February which one would best complement? For Instance should a customer want a particular car on a particular day and that bs unavailable which would make the best alternative?

^^ what he says. If you were to get more than one roadster, look at something a bit more comfortable and slightly roomier for a couple to disappear off for a dirty weekend in. New Alfa Spider / Merc SLK / S2000 type of thing. Or a TVR!

As a business probably a better market for the Elise - ladies and gents drive elises and you can take them out most of the year. Also there is already a caterham hire place in Perth (IIRC).

Thanks Barry, I've looked at that business already and it looks to be very good and has excellent customer feedback.

Caterham Cars actually refer prospective customers there along with a few others in England to try the product.
I think the Caterham is an excellent car but would possibly appeal to less as it is a more extreme driving prospect IMO of course.

My own thoughts were to offer experiences that would appeal to a wider customer base, possibly growing to include add ons such as routes, accommodation, activity recommendations and the like?

If I was hiring a roadster I'd probably go for the MX-5, boxter, or the Z4. I'm pretty sure the wife would hate the others and this would destroy my weekend. For myself it would be a Caterham.
What about Mustangs and Camaros? You can't get these noramly and they're not paticularly expensive.

They also rent out Boxsters as well as Caterhams, and he mentioned adding an Elise or MX-5 to the fleet the last time I spoke to him. Oh, and despite being popular, well known and established for many years, I got the impression that he was making very little profit out of the whole enterprise.

I know what you mean as regards taking the wife along Speed Addicted, mine tries to sleep / read / complain if travelling too quickly etc.... Don't think she would appreciate a Caterham somehow.

Always fancied getting a Corvette however for a rental I think the LHD would put people off and adversely affect the premiums frown

I would have thought the Caterham. It is the only one that is impractical enough to not really be an ownership proposition for most folk but still desireable enough to want a shot of.

I would say elise, a 135 bhp, quick enough to thrill and forgiving enough for a weekend with the mrs, also can take enough soft luggage for a couple of nights away.

IMHO caterham is to extreme, even more seasonal than the lotus and the seats are tiny. I'm pretty slim build and I found the caterham almost claustrophobic (altho that might have been helped by the fact I knew the following minutes would be with mass at warp factor 6).

If I could offer any cars for hire it would be a couple of 40k 360 spiders, how many time have we seen threads for supercar hire in Scotland and a lack of answers.

I appreciate the fezzas might be impractical from a business plan view but I think with good public awareness and decent pricing they'd be out every week.

The worry with all of the above is keeping them in one piece for their working term!!
