Chinese Supermarket- Weird food warning...
Discussion
Went to my first chinese supermarket yesterday, Yau Brothers in Southampton.
Amazing.
Bought loads of sauces, canned stuff, dried chillies, noodles, star anise, etc.
They had huge scallops in the shell priced at a dozen for £6.50, massive bags of frozen duck feet, some sort of meat item in the freezer called "pig fat end", and what looked like some of the biggest prawns I'd ever seen, but suspiciously cheap.
Anyway, I bought a squeezy plastic bottle of Hoisin Sauce, and on the back with the ingredients it says "E129 MAY HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON ACTIVITY AND ATTENTION IN CHILDREN."
By the way, it is delicious, and moreish like food crack.

Every few months I make the trip to Wing Yip in Croydon and stock up on things like noodles, sweet chilli sauce, seaweed, tinned lychees, coconut milk and raw prawns, since all of these things are far cheaper there than anywhere else.
The freezer section in particular is always worth a gawp. I know that Chinese cuisine is particularly creative in its use of the 'entire' animal, but... frozen pig's uterus? I'm sure I must have unknowingly eaten it in sausages etc, but to see the whole thing?

Its a red colouring, an is banned in Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Sweden
But it is a heck of alot better than the stuff it replace - amaranth - and it's good enough for the US [for what that's worth]."E129 MAY HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON ACTIVITY AND ATTENTION IN CHILDREN."
translates to MAY CAUSE HYPERACTIVITY IN CHILDREN. oh and CANCER.
