I have been offered a speed awareness course instead of 3 points. Has anyone done one of these. What is involved exactly. I believe they are £80. I'm not sure weather to just take the 3 points.

Anyway. A speed awareness course.... Its obvious im allready good at speeding.. Maaaaaaa.

Cash + no points vs. Cash + points.

Tricky one.

I've done it.

It's OK actually, not patronising and they don't lecture.

You get some group work where they ask questions and you all have a go at answering and there is some hazard awareness work on the PC too.

There is no pass or fail on the course, and I rather enjoyed it to be honest. Worth taking if you have the opportunity, better than points IMO.

Definitely take the course. The speeding conviction would cost more in initial fine and then a bucket load more on insurance, so take the course and (I think) you don't need to declare that you were caught.

You will only be offered the course once though. Next time you get caught, it's instant points.

Look at it this way. You're going to lose £60 either way.

So which is more valuable to you: a clean licence? That will cost you £20 and an afternoon. Or £20 in your pocket, which will mean you don't have a clean licence and have to keep filling that bit in every time you get an insurance quote for the next five years.

If I ever get offered one it's £20 and the afternoon off work for me.

That was my experience too. Kept the licence clean.

A single speeding conviction doesn't affect your insurance unless you're unlucky with your choice of company. I had one years ago and at renewal the company said that they didn't care about two convictions.

From the one i attended I would have said "Speed" awareness course wasn't perhaps the most accurate title as it covered quite a few general advnaced driving tips.

I seriously think it should be compulsory for every new driver anyway, part of the test perhaps, as the things they covered should be known by anyone who drives not just people caught speeding.

The real frustation is the Mr Big Times attending who think they are above the whole thing, you can actually imagine exactly what they were like at school as they clearly haven't changed much, but such is life.
