On the bottom of the steering pump there is a banjo connecter, if you take this off, inside there is a spring and a valve with a pin on the top, does anyone know which way around this goes into the pump? I.E spring first and what way up the pin goes, it’s not obvious and it fell out when I took the banjo connecter off so I’m not sure how it was before.
This is on a 1998 Primera GT.

Based on complete guess work, but most likely:

the pin will be to retain the spring in the center of the valve plate, the valve plate will sit in which ever bit there is a "seat" for it. Look into the insides of each part for a nice machined seat onto which the valve plate must land! (also, check if the hose is an inlet or outlet hose i.e. comes from the PAS header tank, or goes to the PAS rack. the valve must allow fluid to travel in those directions, so the spring will be to push it closed in an opposite direction)

Thanks for the reply, in the end my old man managed to find a GT in the jap breakers near us, we got another pump and found out we had the setup correct anyway so pump must have been damaged.
