I am looking at getting a hifi setup at the moment, nothing too crazy mainly just for playing my ipod and cds at a decent sound quality.

I am currently at uni and so the budget isnt the greatest. I have been looking around at amps and I am thinking of trying to pick something up along the lines of a Cambridge Audio A500rc.

The main thing I am unsure on is what speakers to go for. I had been thinking about some floorstanders as I get the impression that bookshelf speakers do not produce that much bass. I am not after stupid amount of bass, but I want a full sound.

I will be getting everything second hand, and I have been scouring ebay for any bargains, but the difficulty is that I don't know what is good. I've seen some Gale and Wharfedale at reasonable prices but they have been too far away. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what might be a good set of speakers to look for? Budget-wise, I know it isnt much but I could manage around £100 for them.

ask advice on there and get into the classified section - make sure you read the rules they're very strict on how sales are conducted - which is a good thing!!

Have a look for some TDL floorstanders, like these... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TDL-RTL2-Speakers-/260717999... not the crap ones that Richer Sounds sell nowadays. You might be able to pick a pair up for around a ton. They're transmission line design and all the ones I've heard have had excellent tight bass output.

Got a pair of Walnut Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s in the spare room mated to a Pioneer A400, very happy with them and the Walnut finish looks very nice. Within your budget and free delivery.

Ooh yes, I haven't seen those since I was student! Transmission Line was THE thing to have - I used to go into a large department store just to look at them - way over my budget then of course - in the end I decided to design my own based on the drivers from a PRO-9 design sourced from Wilmslow Audio. Happy days - and I still use them smile

If you can pick it up, it ain't big enough!

Rgee - Thanks for the link to the superfi website, I had tried to view their site before but it wasnt working. Anyway this time it was, and it turns out they have a store round the corner from my flat, so I went there to have a listen to some speakers.

Ended up with the set of wharfedale diamond 9.1 and also picked up a marantz pm7200. They sound great together. Im picking up so much that I had not been able to hear before. Just need to re-record my cds at lossless quality.

Thanks
