what volts should a sag push out on dash

could you please tell me what is the normal volts reading that a sag charges at as i had a problem with mine went flat overnight after using the car yesterday have had the battery on charge for 5 hours now just switched of charger and started car code 8 comes up on dash showing volts at 11.7/6 any opinions/advice gratefully recieved

Mine usually shows between 11-12.x

12.2-12.6v with the ign off. 13.8-14v with the engine running, 11.5v ish when cranking. When on charge 12.6-13v


Code 8 on my list is 'alternator lamp on' - Reach under the airbox, feel the alternator does it feel warm? might be faulty and drawing power when the ign is off which would explain the flat battery.

hi thanks shep will go and check it now if that is the case can the alternator be repaired and if so what needs repairing or where can i get a new alternator from does it match to any other vehicle?

Don't know, IIRC they are about £200 to replace + fitting, I guess you can get recon units. Use the search function (if its working) there have been a few threads on this subject over the past 12 months.

right just been down and checked alternator was cold turn of battery charger and started car code 8 come up straight away and volts are at 11.8 after leaving engine on tickover for between 3-5 mins volts have steadily droped down to 10.8 turned of engine went to restart and no go battery to flat is there a fuse i did check the fuse under airbox which has been replaced by somebody in the past for the 125amp how can i tell that fuse is okay or am wasting my time and it is the alternator if so what part inside the alternator fails which then causes this thanks again sean

Sounds like the alternator is not charging. The AA or similar can check this with a clamp on ammeter. I guess it could be a poor earth if the alternator is OK. I think it earths on the chassis below where the alternator mounts. As for the fuse inspect it for cracks/corrosion and the terminals. If it looks OK then it should be fine. The fuses are cheap (about £1) so you could just change it anyway)

thanks very much for all your help and advice i to think alternator is looking most likely if it is not charging does the battery run flat quickly with the engine running?as this does seem the case as i can watch my volts droping quickly and car wont start after 5 mins which suprised me these cars must have a lot of power being drawn from the battery when running anyway thanks again guys will let you know when its sorted as to what it was

I think its the PS pump. If you remove the 45A relay (in grey thing by the oil tank) it buys you a few more mins if you are on the move.

volts now sowing correctly on dash 13.6+ alternator was faulty so that is now replaced with a new proper alternetor from racing green but now the dash pod lights wont go off when you switch the car of and lock it says power supply code 144 which is now draining the battery again
