Got a phone call from the wife this morning to say that one of the bogs at home is blocked, she's tried caustic soda and Mr Muscle drain cleaner but they won't shift it. "It" being toilet paper I assume, I didn't ask laugh

Anyway, got any tips for unblocking it? She wants to call Dynorod but they charge £70 for a call-out eek I'm not paying that if it's something I can do in 2 minutes when I get home tonight!

Had the same recently. Went to my local trader plumb centre and they sold me a litre of something much stronger than you get at homebase etc.

It took to attempts, but it basically ate the tissue. I was told to wear gloves, avoid getting it on the floor etc, as it was fairly powerful.

Fill bucket with water. Hold bucket at chest height. Dump contents of bucket straight into the loo. Should shift it. Might splash a bit mind. wink

Yep, it was sulphuric acid. 98% apparently. Cost £10 from the local plumb centre.

Flush bog to getbowl full of water, then get a ols towel or similar, push it to the bottom of the bowl and use it like a plunger. Not the nicest but definately the cheapest.
This always works on our downstairs bog, it has one of those flexi soil pipes to connect it to the main pipe and paper seems to get backed up in the flexi part.

You can buy an oversized plunger that will do the job. Flush it and plunge it. Jobs a goodun'

Best tool I ever bought as my missus seems incapable of using anything but half a roll of bog roll per flush and blocks it at least once a week. rolleyes

I guarantee this will work:

Plunger and a plastic bag. Read about on the internet, doubted it (of course) but tried it and it worked first time having tried gloves, coat hangers, various liquids that are supposed to work.

Tighten the pastic bag around the plunger but let it hang losely. Push the whole thing down and a few up and down movements and whoosh, its all gone!

Before you do any of the above , just lift the manhole cover outside to make sure that isn't full , otherwise you will just have a flooded loo to sort as well.

Sometimes it's just a bunch of loo paper (And maybe something else), just past the "U" bend, glove on, hand up bend, have a poke around.

Good luck.

Looks like I was thrashing the keys when you posted, so ignore, I was going to add if its her blockage, hand glove to her biggrin

Good result.

I've always wondered about the usefulness of chucking this down once in a while just to keep the system clean (referring to the toilet, not knocking back a litre of sulphuric acid to keep my bowels moving).

If you 'google' it, alot of places say don't do it, it will do a fair amount of damage. But seeing as it happens once every few years I can't see it being that bad.
