Hi, there is a fella at work with a black Roadster, and was talking to him the other day and he recons it's got 6 cyclinders and 291BHP!

I thought it was just a MX-5, and i can't really find much info on it? seems like he's just taliking crap as it seems to me to just be a japanese version MX5?

Bit confused lol.

He also says he's got a TVR 320T which i cannot find either. Full of st maybe?

Mazda KL-ZE 2.5 V6 swaps have been done, but I don't think you'd make 290bhp from one without FI - which would be a bit pointless when you can get that from boosting the 1.6 or 1.8.

Interesting. Werent they FWD in the MX6? Where does the drivetrain come from? V6 would suit the car nicely.

From memory its was along the lines of custom adadptor plate > RX7 bellhousing > MX5 gearbox, but I'm not entirely sure.

I quite agree that a nice revvy 200hp NA V6 would be perfectly suited to the MX5, also remember reading that the V6 is slightly lighter than the 4-pot and sits further back in the engine bay.

He asked for a race, so i might have to take him up on that offer at Santa Pod. If it was 291 id obviously get smashed (ive got a DC5) but seems like a normal MX-5, so it might be funny to see his face.

If he's at work just get him to open the bonnet hehe

Maybe he thinks the twin cam head is a V?

Or maybe he's simply a monster Billy Bullstter.

He's a bit thick then, surely the four HT leads right on top of the cam cover should give him some sort of clue! lol

hhahaa bit of an update.

He's obviously a complete and utter tool. Was talking to him yesterday and he's had the car 6 months, and not opened the bonnet. So he bought a car of a bloke who said it has a 2.1 straight 6 in a small roadster and he never checked?

Full of crap im afraid lol, now doesn't want a race. biggrin

I also checked his reg on the DVLA site and it came up 1.6 lol.

think you'd struggle to get 290 out of the 5 engine without a fair amount of work - if you're looking at anything close to 300 horses i reckon an engine swap is the best way to go.

i'm still tempted by the 2.9 cosworth V6 out of my dads old ford scorpio!! biggrin

~270 is often considered the limit on standard internals, but with a stronger build (ie rods/pistons) 300+ shouldn't be too hard to achieve - and probably still cheaper than the custom fabrication required for an engine swap that isn't well established.

If I had the spare cash (which I haven't) I'd strengthen my engine and aim for 300+ bhp with the MP62. It's been done in the states but not over here (as far as I know) smile
