power steering fluid

I need to fill up my power steering fluid, but wandering into halfords showed that the task was a little trickier than I imagined.

What fluid do I need? The manual says Mobil ATF 220 (or something like that) however I don't know what the halfords equivalent is?

There appears to be 3 options:
Fluid specifically for Fords.
DFII for mainly General Motors but definately not Fords.
DFIII for mainly General Motors but definately not Fords.

I had the same porb when i first got mine and was trying to stock up on all the essential fluids. Only luck was with a TVR dealer in North London, who dont sell it per unit but keep a big barrel of it and were happy to pour some in a container for me and sell me that.

I don't think you can actually buy that Mobil fluid anymore. Took me AGES to track it down when we got ours car. You can buy exactly the same fluid from any Esso petrol station, but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called.

I bought some for the Chim from Halfwits - It's a white bottle Castrol Automatic (transmission fluid - it's the same stuff) TQ Dextron III.

The word from TVR power is "Doesn't matter, use whatever you like as long as it isn't really cheap stuff"

I now have a bottle of generic, non-cheap fluid from Halfords and it seems to have cured the groaning.

If you know any friendly Squaddies, the Army use Mobil ATF 220 in the power steering in their Land Rovers and have it by the bucket load.

The bottle I have in the boot of the car is so old, the writing has worn off it ! I went to 3 Esso garages over the weekend & none have the same bottle...

Dextron III PAS or automatic transmission fluid is equivalent to ATF220. SHould be red in colour though.
