SDCC / Curborough
Discussion
Hi All, hope you can help me with this.....
I've been visiting Curborough since I was kid and last year moved about 2 miles from the track and go there regularly to spectate, this year I'm interested in taking one of my cars sprinting but i'm not totally sure on what i need to do or how much i can expect it to cost.
from my research so far i think it looks like
> Join SDCC £25
> get an MSA Non Race National B license £37
> Helmet will one for about £200 be ok? any recommendations?
> I'd need some sort of flame retardant race suit thing, would a sparco sprint race suit (circa £225) be ok? again any recommendations for alternatives would be great
> entry to the events, not sure how much this costs?
> any other fixed costs i can expect other than the obvious of fuel, tyres, increased wear on the car etc?
I'd most likely enter my Clio 172 into the standard production cars under 2000cc category, as it's standard production cars is there any modification required to the car i.e harness or ignition cut off switch?
Cheers
Brett

Helmet will one for about £200 be ok? any recommendations? - Make sure it has the correct safety standard sticker on it.
I'd need some sort of flame retardant race suit thing, would a sparco sprint race suit (circa £225) be ok? again any recommendations for alternatives would be great - Yup again make sure it meets the correct standards.
entry to the events, not sure how much this costs? - Depends on the organising club.
any other fixed costs i can expect other than the obvious of fuel, tyres, increased wear on the car etc? - That covers the most expensive ones but have a think about insurance. Your road cover will not cover you on the track. If you want a motorsport policy give Richard Egger or Competition Car Insurance a call.
I'd most likely enter my Clio 172 into the standard production cars under 2000cc category, as it's standard production cars is there any modification required to the car i.e harness or ignition cut off switch? - You will need a fire extinguisher (just a hand held one not a plumbed in system), timing strut and race numbers which are all pretty cheap.
There's a good beginners guide by the MGCC here: http://www.mgcc.co.uk/mg-racing/speed-championship... Their sprint championship is very friendly btw.
Also have a look at the MSA's Blue Book particularly pg 321 onwards where the specific regs for sprinting are http://www.msauk.org/site/cms/contentviewarticle.a...
Finally contact the club and have a chat with the sprint organiser. I don't know the SDCC particularly but IME series organisers are always happy to help new competitors.

I live close to Curborough too.
There's normally an introductory day around May - the SDCC run a day where they tell you about the club, sprint racing and everything you need to get started, plus they get you on the track for a couple of laps with one of their 'instructors' (club members).
Pretty thorough, interesting and best of all... free.
