who is the world's vainest sports person
Discussion
Even his team mates seem to agree that Kevin Petersen is totally in love with himself. This got me thinking about the thin line between vanity and self-belief, which seems to be at its very thinnest in sports.
So, who gets the balance between ability and smugness most wrong? Who are the vainest folk in sport? I'll propose Petersen, Venus Williams, M Schumacher, Ian Poulter, and just about any athlete in the 'explosive' track and field events like 100m, 200m. David Ginola probably deserves an honourable mention too, having managed to keep his vanity going for so long.
Couple of sub-categories: people with such total lack of self-awareness that they don't realise how badly they're coming across, and anybody who uses 'we' instead of 'I' in an attempt at self-deprecation when they're talking about themselves all the time. Mansell appears to be mellowing out a bit now but by god he was tough to listen to in his glory days.

First name that leapt to mind was Roger Federer.
Point taken about Beckham and Ronaldo but something about Federer wearing stuff with his "RF" logo on them just creeps the f
k out of me.
And those bloody jackets he wears whenever he's Wimbledon defending champ.Point taken about Beckham and Ronaldo but something about Federer wearing stuff with his "RF" logo on them just creeps the f

Hold on, do you mean vain as in thinks a lot of how he or she looks or vain in the sense of their ability?
And if we're discussing ability at what point do vainity/arrogance become someone just telling the truth about themselves? I'd agree with Federer on the whole weird personal gold jackets but he is probably going to be remembered as the greatest of all time in tennis for quite some time.
To some extent you could say similar of Schumi, personal issues aside.
