That's the ballast resistor for the ignition.

if you are using your original coil then it is eeded. if you have changed the coil then you will need to check the operating voltage at the coil to see whether or not the resistor is still needed

Thanks for the advice Neil. So, can I replace the coil with a ballasted (?) coil and throwaway this bit of china ?

Not quite as simple as that.

Now I am no electician and am always prepared to be corrected concerning Lucas dark arts but... most coils are called 12v coils but some are genuine 12v, some are less than 12v and are designed to run with a ballast resistor, I am sure that 12V batteries which are also really 14.4 volt play a part.

the crux of it all is that you can cook a coil by running without a ballast if it needs one and have a weak spark if you ballast a coil that doesn't need it.

And err,.... the relationship with the rev counter needs to be condisered.
