Optical Leads, more than one size?

I've just bought an optical lead to connect my PC to my A/V Amp, having never used one before I am confused, it goes in the whole but doesn't seat properly, I've used a fair amount of pressure but it just pops out, on both devices

Am I being retarded or are there different sizes?

Have you taken the little rubbery cap from the end which protects the lens?
