Now that F1 is going hd, I am going to get some sort of hd box to go with my hd telly. I already have sky plus and am pretty sure I can get a free sky box so its just an extra tenner a month or so to get hd from them.

But what about a hd free view box? I understand I can get a switch or a gizmo from Maplins to use a sky input, but will I get an hd feed from the existing four year old lnb's?

Is it worth getting a freeview hd box which will cost about ( I think) about £200?

Any advice or experience doing this?

We just had a brand new HD box put in , free of charge , free fitting & no extra fee for HD , My TV is an early 42' panny plasma & is not HD , but they would not give us an ordinary sky + box , i did mention that the virgin package was highly attractive though, this may have given me the edge , think it depends whom you speak to , On a more positive note , if we decide to upgrade to full HD telly it will be easy just to upgrade with a phone call

You do NOT need to pay for Sky's HD package to get the free-to-air HD channels, which currently are: BBC One HD, BBC HD, ITV 1 HD, C4 HD and C5 HD.

I have a Sky+ HD box without the HD package and get all of the above.

(In Scotland, STV is not HD on Sky but you can still watch ITV 1 HD through extra channels).

I also upgraded to HD for free.

I think you're thinking about Freesat HD rather than Freeview HD - they aren't the same.

Your £10 buys you many more HD channels than the free ones above but you might not want them. However Sky supply what is arguably a much better PVR device. I'd wager your £200 box won't be a patch on Sky+

Also, £200 buys you 20 months of Sky HD, and you'll get the HD box for free.... Easy decision I reckon.

Or just get the free HD box and pocket the £10 a month.

Unless you think you might want to cancel the subscription one day AND still be able to watch what you've recorded!

I understood your post perfectly thanks, and I appreciate your info. But for a fiver a month for 6 months it seemed a good deal to upgrade my existing sky+ package to HD. smile

Sorry, I thought you said you were paying £5 for HD stuff. I don't pay anything for my HD because I only want to watch the Free-To-Air HD channels (which includes the F1....).

I could flog my stuff too as they didn't get me into a new contact for the HD box either.

Anyway, glad you're happy (whatever you're paying wink )

Sky Atlantic starts up next month, some awesome shows coming including loads of new HBO stuff from the states.

Sky1 HD, Atlantic HD and Discovery HD are worth the money I reckon.

Maybe, but the OP said he wanted to watch the F1 in HD, and that's free.............

Yes, and the OP then decided to pay £5 for the extra channels - and is happy with that decision, as would I be.

Pay more get more - it's a novel idea will it catch on? wink

I fortunately didn't buy my telly from M&S's..

It would have been M&S HD tv.

Sorry!
