E39 M5 Advice - anyone been to see this car?
Discussion
Long time lurker looking for advice. Looking to trade in my mint E36 M3 for one of my dream cars - E39 M5.
Unfortunately there don't seem to be many available near me (edinburgh) under £10k and with under 100k miles.
One that i have seen crop up again and again in the classifieds is this one:-
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1896965.htm
The spec, history and colour are all perfect, but it worries me a bit that it's been up for sale for so long. Since it's a 300 mile round trip for me, i wondered if any of you guys have been been to see this car and decided not to buy it for whatever reason? I've emailed the seller for more info, but thought i'd chance my arm and ask you guys for a 2nd opinion.
Much appreciated

On the face of it the history looks good if it all checks out and is backed up with plenty of receipts. It is a 1999 model in (IMHO) a bland colour though, which is probably why it's proving harder to shift. The wheels look to have been refurbished in standard silver and not shadow chrome which would make me think the car has been looked after on a budget.
Personally, I'd be looking at this (Scotland):
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2116652.htm - facelift (a must IMHO), best colour, good options
or these (Yorkshire):

I assume you restrict yourself to cars with 100,000 miles for no reason other than you believe all cars to be past it once they pass this milestone? Well forget it, this isn't a 2006 Renault Megane DCi or some other Euro-s
tbox. Condition and provenance are all that matters...

As you say though, a well maintained honest 110k car is better than a 60k shed which spent half it's life parked up and the other getting run into the ground.
Thanks again.

For some reason i really like the E39 in silverstone. Odd because i don't like cars in that kind of light metallic silver blue normally. Just seems to suit the E39 M5 imho.u13rr1 said:

Yeah it's an arbitrary figure really. I'm certainly not scared of high milers (my M3 and Range Rover Classic are both sitting on 106k each) but i guess i have resale values in mind. I tend to only keep cars for a 12-18 months, so always have a view on what would be considered desirable resale factors. Agree with everything said so far. Shame about the wheels and it could be an indication of previous care. If it were owned by someone fastidious then you'd have thought they would be correct. I would also recommend a facelift, and if you are concerned with resale, I would expect a facelift to be easier to sell on, and command a better price than a pre-facelift. All just IMHO of course!

I got my wheels refurbed but not in the original shadow silver. They're a much darker shade now than the original colour, and yes it was cheaper, but the guy who did them for me took so much pride in them and so much care over them that I'm glad i got him to do them.
I suspect the reason it has'nt sold is that most people will be scared witless by the running costs and the potential for something catastrophic going wrong.
If you are serious about it just go in with eyes open.23.5 per gallon and likely a litre of 10w60 every 5-700 miles.Tyres are 200 plus for decent fronts and more for backs.
I've put 50k on mine in less than 2 years!!!Personally i would'nt worry about facelift or not, or whether its got a satnav(my £50 garmin is WAY better than the BMW fit) or anything else like that.
Drive it.Get it up on a ramp and get someone under it who knows what to look for.Check every thing electric.Start it from cold and listen. Then start it when warm (if you dont know why then pay someone who does to go with you).
Then just enjoy it.

This one looks really nice and you dont see many in this colour either.
Plus it is a facelift model with a full BMW SH and looks well looked after.

My current daily drivers do 23mpg (M3) and 15mpg(RRC) so i'm already a familiar face at the petrol atation. I'm also fortunate to be able to absorb a four figure repair bill without having to remortgage the house (provided the bill starts with a '1' or a '2'
) so i think the time is right to do the M5 thing.Taking on board all the advice you guys have given so far, i think i'll focus on facelift cars and pay for the AA or someone to give the car a proper examination beforehand.
Thanks again.
I was in the same position a couple of years ago, having decided that I really wanted one but was really nervous about the potential for big bills.. So I eventually bit the bullet and bought one..
Best decision ever.. The car is epic.. And ive owned some cars over the years (check my profile),
I will of owned the car for 2 years in february and so far ive replaced a heater transistor.. Approx £70, had an oil service done.. approx £175.. and a pair of rear tyres (Falken 452's, superb tyres at a very very good price).
Make sure you get a goodun and you will never want to sell it.
Ps if it doesnt go like absolute stink it probably needs the maf's replacing.. Again not a big expense, Overall a fabulous amazing car.

Trade-in not a necessity. Going to advertise my M3 for sale shortly but already have some interest in it so it should sell one way or tother. Gives me a much larger pool of cars to choose from.
I've had some good cars in my time (well, good for my limited means anyway!) but this will be the first time i've bought one of my dream cars. Feel like a big kid.

Could you post a link here to your E36 M3 when you get it advertised? I'd be interested to take a look.
