Hi all, i am currently looking at E46 M3's that are for sale and was hoping someone could answer this simple question -

Are the service intervals purely mileage dependant, or is there a maximum time that should not be allowed to pass between services?

I ask as i am considering viewing a car that is not due another service for 7.5K miles (approx)but was last serviced feb 10 (11 months ago for those that skim read wink).

What would be the correct steps to take to keep the service history up to scratch?

Thanks smile

It states in the service manual that if the car is only covering low mileage it is recommended that you at least change the engine oil every two years even if the service is not due.

In the case of the car in question i would imagine when two years has elapsed since the last service,if the service indicator was still showing a couple of thousand miles to the nxt service it would make sense just to have the full service done a bit early.

And the mileage to next service is driving style dependant. Expect the number that pops up on start-up to drop quicker if you spend most of your time hooning around.

Thanks for the clarification on that chaps. I was worried that i would need to service the car one month after purchase. As i do low mileage then the 2 years will come up at about the time the mileage warrants the service (i appreciate short journeys cause the counter to decrease quicker).

Short journeys will only make it 'count faster' if they're around town as it works on the fuel consumption figure the computer generates. My CSL jumps in 50 mile lots too, although I have done more than 25 miles and it hasn't changed on restarting. I think it works it out to within 10 or 1 mile, but the display only changes on the '50'...
