Im looking for a hotel for a weekend break. Good food, spa, nice walks, any sort of attractions. In Scotland ofcourse, Lomond, Callander not too far from Glasgow. Something toward 4-5 star and pretty swish.

Any recomendations?

Cheers

Not sure it has a spa, but fab food and they always seem to upgrade to huge suites if you go out of season.

Or if you're into golf, we've stayed here many times. Not as swish as Cromlix mind: http://www.loch-lomond.co.uk/

The extract below is from tripadvisor (whose reviews, in fairness, appear often to be written by the competitor down the street);)

My Mother and I decided to stay at Cromlix House before our day at the Nick Nairn Cook School in December. All I have to say is 'my dear lord'.

It was so cold it was not tolerable. Utterly freezing, and this was only when we went in the door. On ringing the bell at reception, nobody came for around 4 - minutes. We would later discover that there was no Manager in the hotel and that all the foreign staff do "all jobs" (think perhaps Faulty Towers).

We were taken to out rooms to find them being heated with small, 1960's, smelly fan heaters. They were FREEZING! The girl happened to mention on the way out the door very quietly that some rooms may not have hot water!? She failed to tell my Mother this - and she had no hot water. On moving to another room, it was physically so cold she went back to the old one!

I decided to have a bath in my lovely 1960's light-green bathroom (now this is not a word of a lie) When I was in the bath I could see my breath. It was so uncomfortable I had to get out. The (brick) TV also didn't work, probably because there was no back on the remote and a battery missing? Don't even get me started on the hair dryer or decor!

The food was ok, however the hotel was so cold that between getting it from the kitchen to the table the soup was cold again! The cutlery was also so cold it was difficult to hold.

We went to bed and prayed we would wake-up alive. Luckily we did, to be served again by 'Manwell' in the morning - before a sharp departure. We complained whole heartedly upon checkout to only be offered £40 off!!

My advice. Take several jumpers or just go along the road to Glen Eagles.

hahaha!! Reminds me of the time I persuaded her to go to the Lake District.."look at the lovely hotel on this internet site"!!

In the middle of the one night we stayed we both woke bolt upright to a sound like a monster ripping apart an animal!! Terrifying!! Being a tough guy, I picked up a blunt instrument and wrenched the door open expecting to be confronted by whatever demon lurked outside......Nothing!! The by now eardrum busting noise was coming from an adjoining room. And I am not kidding here, the place was VIBRATING to it!! walls and floor shaking! It was actually the grunting human pig in the room's snoring. Snoring the like of which I had never before heard and will never hear again. No doubt this beast HAS to stay in hotels (one night at a time) because no-one in the world could live with or beside that inhuman caterwauling. And lucky old me gets to spend an entire night with it.

Never EVER go to the Lake District. EVER. Stay at home instead. It's a LOT less stressful and unpleasant and, I hate to say, most places there were pretty grubby too.

Anyway, we're off to spend the weekend in Edinburgh even though no-one'll talk to us coz they're too stuck up (and gay).

The review in Trip adviser is (as many are) obviously laughable. One doesn't get 5 stars with cold rooms and 'okay' food! You should read some of the reviews about the splendid Isle of Barra Hotel, which is a joy, but get's hammered by the most blatent 'agent provocateurs'

As for the Lake District (where I also lived), it's a great place to visit, but not in Summer, when it's full of caravans. Good cheap Inn accommodaition in the Kirkstile, Loweswater.

If you're thinking of Loch Lomond, avoid Cameron House unless you can make sure there will be very few children there.

I probably heard that guy too, years ago we were staying at the Youth Hostel at Wasdale, which had about 6 bunk beds (so 12 people) in each big room.

We had gone to bed when the most god almighty snoring started up, I swear to god that I was planning murder.
The snoring stopped, but this was because 'Snorezilla' was getting up for a pee.
In leaving his upper bunk, he somehow managed to spill what sounded like £3487.12 in pennies from his trousers, which proceeded to roll over the hardwood floors for the next 2 hours (or so it felt).

We didn't sleep well, and next morning at breakfast we saw the culprit.
'It' honestly looked like some Human/Pig interbreeding experiment, a bit like the original Hunchback of Notre Dame, but not as pretty, I do wonder if 'it' had escaped from Porton Down.

Shame, it spoiled the Lake District for me too..... I now stay in my campervan rather than risk Hostels.

Monachlye Mhor just past Callander is excellent. None of that spa nonsense, but you can arrive by seaplane!

Mr Trophy - Good suggestion but Gleneagles is shrouded by a git of a work collegue who likes to frequent there. Also took the bird there when i was trying to get my way with her, bit of afternoon tea etc.....down to stirling for some chips later on.....i took a few more attempts!

Get Carter - Nice ill look into Cromlix, been on the site and it looks the business

Mathew - Budget wise not really fussed, if a place comes highly reccomended and there are some quality things to do, something to remember, then fine.

Family Dub - Well noted! thanks.

S2 - Looks like an option, ill check out the surrounding areas for things to do

Workshy - Holy sweet jesus, that is the Daddy, email getting excitedly typed with trembling fingers into the seaplane from Lomond to the hotel, it looks like there building a jetty for it according to there website.

The trip advisor piece was a laugh, take it they didnt like it!!

Thanks for all your inputs, well appreciated

Mar Hall at Erskine is close to Glasgow and not far from Loch Lomond, spa, golf course etc, etc.

Other than Cameron house that's all I can think of in that area that matches your criteria.

For a good hotel with spa near Callander, well I can't think of any....Probably Airth Castle or Inchyra Grange (re-furbing/extending at the moment so spa facilitie might be reduced.)
Heading north west towards Fort William gives you the options of the Isles of Glencoe or even better the Holly Tree.

For a relaxed, swish, romantic weekend venue not too far away though I'd go to the Isle of Eriska, near Oban.

GetCarter, you normally mention The Torridon http://www.thetorridon.com/ I stayed there last year and enjoyed it very much, very homely
and quiet. They dont have a spa and I think they're closed till mid Feb.

Oh....and you have to ask for a telly.

Piperdam near Dundee if you can manage self catering. No spa, but there's a hot tub outside your lodge, and nobody to bother you.

The other option would be the big spa at (i think) The Sheraton in Edinburgh. Cameron House is nice, if a little expensive, but there has to be no kids or footballers there for it to be a pleasant experiance.

On a more serious note, try what Relais & Chateaux have to offer. Not many people know their places. They're dear, but usually pretty good.

I used to live on the Cromlix Estate, in the stable square, which is about 100m from the hotel. It was owned by the Eden family, the son of Anthony Eden in fact. I believe the house is on a long term lease, and is still owned by the family.
The location is very good, only 5 minutes from the A9, but remote enough to be very peaceful.
Land Rover and Jaguar have both used the venue for vehicle launches, at least in the late 90's when I was there. Used to cadge a ride in the latest toys.
One of the partners in the hotel is, or was, Kenny Logan, the husband of Gabby Logan, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.
I had a wonderful 7 years living there, with the run of the entire estate. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, living within 100m of the hotel I never once went to dinner there!
