So it's that time of year again. We've decided we're selling the OH's 1.2 Clio as we really want a larger car (since the MiTo is already tiny) - so what are the options...

Needs to seat 2 adults + baby, plus have all stuff for aforementioned for a week (which is where the MiTo falls down - the Pram fills the entire boot on its own).

Must be reasonably pokey and fun to drive

Must get at least 30mpg on a run for a petrol or 40mpg on a diesel (her requirement, not mine wink )

And possibly hardest of all, it must be £1000 tops.

Thoughts?

Current favourites are a E36 3 Series or a 156, but broaden my horizons.

Should add, anyone who has small children, does a pushchair fill the entire boot on a 156/E36 saloon or is it quite accomodating?

A trusty Honda Accord 2.0i estate. Should get at least a W plate for that money, 35mpg, reliable and cheap to repair. Shame I have just sold a pretty decent one.

E36 boots are huge, and they come with a first aid kit wink

If you get a good one they will last forever, and whilst good on long trips may be slightly juicy around town..

Something like this..

Have you thought about a Mondeo, you'll get one a bit newer, and the parts and servicing will certainly be cheaper, a lot of car for not much money..

Or a Honda Accord..

Civic VTi like mine? On a run it get's between 30 and 32mpg, fairly pokey, reasonable boot. Add a ZS180 ARB and it handles quite well too. I've done 30k in 3 years and all I've replaced is the exhaust system (bar all the usual service items), just a thought.

MX-5.

I mean, errr, despite my prejudice against BMs, an E36 would probably be my choice. smile

i have an e36 and i love it however, u will get 30mpg+ out of a 318 but there gutless, my 328 does an average of 26 so maybe look at a 323 which is a detuned 325 170 bhp apposed to 192. touch wood mine has been has been really good, just kept on top of servicing and i do it myself, its dead easy on them so running cost arnt that much for me.

as matt says have a look at the civic

At the risk of dredging up unpleasant memories, how good are the E36s in a crash as they seem to be too old for an ncap rating.

One of the other contenders (Saab 9-5) managed to blag
full 5 stars which is a big plus point in its favour...

A 9-5 for a bag? How many millions of miles did that have on it?

They seem to come up occasionally with between 120-150k, but I know 2 people with them, one on 230k, one on 325k. It seems if they're looked after they last forever. I think they're buy on condition rather than mileage.

Hell my old 220 Turbo has 197k on it...

Ok, she's removed the decision from my hands. Apparently we can have either a 3 litre S Type or a Zt190. Best fiancee EVER.biggrin

It's got to be the 'sporty' Rover, although, for a bag? Bit of an ask no?

Not really no - that's why we're leaning slightly towards that over the Jag - she's upped the budget to £1500, and there's some quite tidy ZT190s for that. I remember them being lovely to drive and the boot is collossal.

Although the Jag is also pretty good on that budget...

Just need to get her Clio sold now smile

See the problem there is my mate has an ATR, so if I got an Accord I'll spend the rest of my life feeling inadequate wink Especially since I believe the V6 was only in the Coupe which is no good to me frown

I was thinking more this... http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...

As Jim said, go for the Accord, my wife has one and it is one of the most reliable roomy economical cars on the market, oh and it sticks to the road like you know what, cheap to insure as well, don't go for the diesel as they are a little under powered, 31+mpg around town with the 2 litre petrol and a heavy foot lol. If you want a ride out just shout.
