Following on from my Why can't I find a car I want to keep thread. Here is part 2, what car do I want next?

The budget is anyhwere from 1k-2.5k preferably lower the better as I'm a tight arse.

The requirements? Fast but no higher than group 15 insurance. There seems to be a big change from 15 to 16 so unfortunately Clio Sport is out of the question! (Under 30 in new group terms)
Preferably Petrol
Mileage/Age I'm not fussed about.

The shortlist to give you an idea:

  • Rover 200vi (Can't find one within 100 miles of me)
  • Honda Civic EK or EG with 1.5 Vtec engine (y0)
  • MG ZS/R 120 1.8
  • Astra Coupe Turbo (top end of budget)
  • Golf Mk4 Turbo (top end of budget)
Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks
Danny

What are your thoughs on BMWs?

You could probably get a higher milage e46 coupe for aruond £2500.

I've got a 323ci and its good fun, insurance is pretty cheap too (£725 for a 21 year old)

hehe

Your comedy has returned..

Just done some quotes on Admiral (they want 1900 for my current car? Even though I paid 1300 not long ago)

But using the 1900 as a marker.. they want 2900 for a Clio Sport frown

1000 for a 200Vi because it comes up as a 1.4 5 door??

1600 for a ZR 120 but 1900 for a ZS 120 :\

Doing BMW now.

Two Twin Spark engines, the 1.6 and 2.0. Insurance is fairly high, about a group 12 for the 1.6 and group 14 for the 2.0, but they are worth it. Terrific, revvy engines with a great soundtrack. Otherwise, excluding the GTA there's the 1.9JTDs which are another strong and flexible engine.

Normal 1.6 c105bhp, 1.6 Twin Spark 120bhp and the 2.0 TS with around 150bhp.

I have the 1.6 TS. Group 12 insurance, lovely place to sit IMHO, looks lovely, just about quick enough to get me into trouble and makes a lovely noise for a 4 pot. Bad side, ride is a tad firm, and some are know to go through a lot of oil. But buy well and you won't have any problems

Gratuitous picture

The Coupes are obscenely expensive for what they are, even the 16v. Or they were when I checked, more expensive for me than the equivalent GTV Twin Spark (which are a group 17 IIRC).

Insurance has come back stupid on the 147, and finding one in good condition with leather for under £2k will take some haggling, so I'm going to leave that one.

What are everyones views on MG's? They don't seem to be selling at all atm! I can insure most of them except the big power ones for a decent price

I like them.

I didn't mind the ZR until I drove several of them. Horrible clutch action, notchy gearbox and the use of criminally hard, brittle plastics almost universally inside. I did quite enjoy the TF though, good fun and the engines aren't bad across the range.
