Mechanic's advise needed

I have a Mitsubishi 3000GTO twin turbo and have just discovered the front nearside gaiter is split, spitting grease all over the place. It's now Friday at 5:30 so no chance of getting it fixed straight away.

Will I damage the car by driving it? (got a PH meet on Sunday)

Is it dangerous to drive it like that?

Could be - depends on where the escaped grease ends up (brakes -> won't stop, somewhere hot -> fire???), also if all the grease escapes the joint will fail and either sieze or shatter.

For a get-you-home or short trip, clean all dirt off the outside, add a bit more of the correct sort of grease just in case, wrap in the strongest looking plastic bag you can find and secure with long cable ties, making sure then ends don't catch anywhere.

Drive slowly and don't turn any sharp corners!

Adrian, Thanks for the advise, unfortuately a bit late as I've just got in. I wrapped loads of duck tape around the split and it looked pretty good so I thought I'd road test it. It stood up fine to a 1.6 unit blast on the A40 and a bit of BMW M3 baiting near my house on the way back. Cheers.
