These are really good cars, seriously, but an acquired taste.

They came from the pre-Golf era when VW had one blisteringly successful product, the beetle, not much else, and a bit of a problem with how to replace it, so they came up with a series of Beetle-derived rear engined models, an estate and a fastback as I recall. They plainly weren't going to take VW forward into the future, and the next effort was the K70, which was a total plug.

Then they came up with the Golf, and the rest is history.

If you have one of these, you should be aware that it comes from the same Hitler promoted DNA as the 911.
