Brera timing chain
Discussion
Engine management light on 2006 Brera,2.2JTS.Booked into Western Alfa,Glasgow yesterday for the 2nd time to diagnose fault.Warning light stays on for max 3 days and then disappears and comes back on about 1 week later and off after 1 day and the same process again and again.Error code indicating slight wear on timing chain or slight misalignment.Western have said that a new chain and tensioners is required £670.00 inc fitting but I have read that this system has the advantage of not needing replaced during the lifespan of the engine. The car has only covered 29000 miles.
Has anyone else come across this problem or can give further advise.I am not convinced by Western's recommendations.

Unfortunately it does happen on some early 2.2s. Later chains were modified. It would be worth seeing if there was any goodwill available from Alfa given the low mileage and the fact they obviously recognise the problem by releasing modified parts.
If you google Alfa 2.2 timing chain you will find you are not alone.

When it was announced that this "new" GM-based 2.2 had a chain instead of the 156's prone-to-snapping belts everyone who'd been thinking of buying a new 159 breathed a sigh of relief.
Unconvinced, I asked a pal of mine who worked for a Vauxhall dealers what these thing were like and his exact words were "Christ, not the 2.2. They snap their timing chains all the time."
At 170K + the timing chain in my 75 TS doesn't even rattle.
Anyone else remember the 80's when Alfas used to be s
t?
