Got caught again last night. Out with a group of 15. I, and 3 or 4 others were driving and not drinking at all . Menu wasn't that exciting so I just had a small starter and main course, no sweet and a coffee.

At the end of the evening some bright spark suggests splitting the bill 15 ways as 'nobody can remember what they had'. My £18 meal cost me £36 as some people had had 2 sweets and had shared 6 bottles of wine.

Must remeber to agree how we will pay the bill BEFORE we eat next time.

Don't drive next time, and hit the wine!

Just make sure you eat the most expensive thing next time hehe

Seriously though, there is a group of about 6 of my mates and I. We eat together fairly regularly and just split the bill as you win some, you lose some. And, at the end of the day, if I pay £40, but only eat £20 worth, it's not the end of the world (for me!!) as at some point it will be the other way round also.

Just my view.

Cheers

Gah, sounds like pretty unreasonable behaviour from your friends. I don't mind chucking in a bit extra, but double what you ate is silly.

If there's a group of us out the non-drinkers get rounds together and so do the drinkers. If any of the non-drinkers drive us around all night we all pay for their food & soft drinks.
We've always done it this way and it works well.

I hate it when the bill arrives and people start quibbling about whether they didn't have a dessert or didn't drink as much wine. It's easier just to round the bill up with a tip and divide it equally? If they're friends you go out with every now and then sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

I once paid the whole bill just to end the embarrassing discussion on the table which got silly when someone brought their mobilephone calculator out and started working everyone's meal out to the nearest penny.

If it makes you feel better you could maybe look at your evening a different way... it wasn't an £18 that you paid too much for, but a good night out with mates that cost just £36.

Just my opinion. smile

Man up next time. Take cash with you. As soon as splitting the bill is suggested, remind them that you remember exactly what you had.

"Here is my £18 plus £2 tip."

Job done.

I got stung once when I wasn't drinking and everybody else had about 4 beers each compared to my 1 bottle of lemonade. Won't be letting that happen again...

I regularly eat out with a group of people and we just split the bill x number of ways, I've been to meals that have been utterly ruined by people quibbling.

I feel terrible for your lose and you have my deepest sympathies

Oh sorry wrong thread

If you went to the theatre together and one person went to the toilet and missed 15 minutes of the show should they pay less?

Don't think of paying for a meal think of paying for a night out with some friends and good night out does not involve bickering over who had more chips.

If I'm out for a meal, and a few aren't drinking, I always makes sure I put in enough to cover what I've had - usually abit more tbh. There's no way I'd expect to get a night out on the cheap.

Alright with rounds, sometimes it works in your favour, sometimes against. It's works itself out in the end.

How can a group that's had 6 bottles of wine not contribute fully is beyond me.

Not saying it's the case with this group, but with some people it's almost a game for them to see what they can get away with!

Out with acquaintances last week. We split bill which is fine but we were a share short £30 and everyone there said they'd put their money in.

Embarrassing and annoying and it cost me £30 extra as nobody would budge.

There is a big difference between being tight and letting your friends take advantage of you.

Edit: Possible sex joke. hehe

Agree, it is only a non issue for some when you have plenty of money.

If everyone is drinking then fair play, split the bill equally. If one person isn't, split the food bill equally and the drink bill between the others. I hate people who argue the toss about whether they had a £4.95 starter instead of a £5.75 starter when the resulting maths figures out that the overall difference to their bill is 8p, but in this case the OP has paid twice as much as he actually had.

Whenever I go out with friends we always remember what we ate/drank and pay for what we ate/drank!
I'm not paying extra for someone to have a starter/dessert/wine when I'll probably just have a main course and some tap water! (I'd rather save my money for other things - like cars!)

I wouldn't mind covering for friends as what goes around comes around, but acquaintances expecting me to cover their starters/desserts/drinks can GTF. I'd keep a mental note of what I've had, round it up to the nearest fiver to cover tips and slap the notes on the table.

People that take advantage of others are as bad as those who don't want to pay a penny more than they've consumed.

I bet dinner is fun while you sit mumbling to yuorselfeach time someone ordes something above average in price, out pops the calculator and run to the whiteboard you set up next to the table.

If it's my mates we always just split it. Life's too short to worry about divvying up every last quid.
