Joey Barton....
Discussion
Sat watching his interview on SS, he says he doesnt think there is 2 english midfielders playing better than him at the current time, and understands he probably wont get back in the england team because of his history.
im sat here wondering...
is he over estimating his form, and can he fit into the england set up if he isnt?
by the way, listening to him, seems like he does realise he was a t
t. and that he has, on the whole, cleaned up his act...

He is (imho) a good player, tough in the tackle, good passer, got a good shot on him, just an olive short of a pizza...
t. and that he has, on the whole, cleaned up his act...The whole cleaned up the act? How does he explain the jab he gave to Pederson?? a few weeks ago? Whilst not on David Haye proportions, still no place in the game or the England team for a player like that...
Wasted talent imho and someone who will have a lot of regrets when he hangs up his boots...
As a toon fan, let me start of by saying he hasnt cleaned up his act, he is, and always will be, a thug and a hatefull person. Right, as a player, he is actually fairly high in english midfielders as far as ability goes, b ut i would never want to see someone that despicable in an england shirt thanks very much.

He has a shocking history, yes, but I have met him a number of times now and he comes across as a top bloke. Happy to talk for as long as I wanted, and seen him giving some kids his hat before because they were cold.
Hitler loved his dog.He won't get to play for England because however much he claims to have cleaned up his act he cannot be trusted.

He'd be a joke against a Good international team. Against most top national sides they'd single him out for a few heal taps and mild digs to make him snap. We'd then be down to ten men in 15 minutes.
I dont really think thats his problem these days. I saw him on motd a few weeks ago against Wolves and he got kicked from pillar to post, but everytime, pretty much got straight up and got on with it. I'm sure he knows hes gonna get hacked and kicked every game, but he is learning to get on with it now. But with his personality, its like hes got a sort of tourettes, where his brain just doesn't think before his body moves. I think he is a good player and is getting back to his best, its just with all his off field problems in the past hes never gonna lose that tag or stereotype. Hes just an easy target for opposition fans and i dont have sympathy in that respect.

I'd hate to see him in an England shirt, he's a thug, he has (imo) gone beyond the common flashpoint reaction of handbags or a couple of scuffles. Cigars etc are thuggery & whether he ever manages to leave that part of him behind his deserved reputation should keep him out of the England set up.
In answer to the original question, as a Toon fan, who's seen him up close in most games this season he is in blinding form. I have to agree with him that there are very few English midfielders playing better than him so far this season.
I'm not a huge England fan, so not bothered if he's picked or not for them.
However, whilst he does seem to be a lot more mature than in the past, I do feel there is always that underlying concern that he will revert to type.
Mind you that is not helped to an extent by the likes of wolves, a bunch of complete thugs in that match and a real cop out by the officials, and the way the media acts. I do not condone any of his actions, but at times acts that would merit one level of punishment for one player do seem to get upped a level or two simply because its J Barton esq.
Good player? Yes. International? Probably not, simply because of his past acts and reputation.

He's simply a bully selecting weaker targets. Once when at City he pushed his luck too far and all but wet himself when Dave Seaman grabbed him by the throat and held him up a wall.
Several other 'team mates' have also given him a good 'shoeing' during his time at City.
...when was the last time we saw his pathetic on pitch shinanagins against the likes of a Keane, Viera or de Jong?

I have a mutual friend in common with Joey.
Like many of you, my first thoughts were 'he's a dirty thug who deserved to be banned'... after a long conversation with our mutual friend (I cant and wont go into details for various reasons, the main one being our friend works here at PH Towers), I was assured that he was full of remorse, and is devastated at the thought of never being picked for England (something which came across in the interview yesterday).
He is also incredibly proud of the one England cap he has, and has a desire to pull the White Shirt on, seemingly more-so then alot of the ***** that do play for England.
To keep Barton out of the squad is slightly hypocritical IMO- to play for England, you have to be seen as an example to youth. Well, out of our team:
Rio Ferdinand- banned for 8 months for missing a drug test.
Captain Fantastic, David Beckham- continually accused of having affairs
Peter Crouch- affairs
John Terry- Affairs
Lampard- Affairs
Rooney- Granny Shagging, affairs, and continually fighting on the pitch.
Cole- dodgy antics with a mobile phone, affairs, etc..
Carroll- Assault- forced to live with his Captain
Wilshere- Assault
Wright-Phillips- nicking out of handbags in a club.
Hardly Exemplary stuff, is it?
Barton has been doing a fantastic job for Newcastle, delivering crosses and balls with devastating accuracy and providing a dangerous attack when linking up with Carroll.
Do I think Barton should play for England again? Yes.
Do I think this should be on a condition? Yes- any more of this 'antics' and he should NEVER play for England again.
The Wright-phillips thing was his brother Bradley at Southampton i think.
Well lets look at the current England midfield...
Stevie G - Nowhere near the form of previous seasons, but still has it in his locker.
Lampard - Coming back from a lengthy injury, but is already getting back to form, poor in England shirt of late, but if picking the quad on form, imo still deserves a place
Barry - Supposedly one of Capellos favs, he was poor in the world cup cause he wasn't 100% fit, doesn't offer much going forward but a good shield for the defence, no pace and perhaps one i'd look at dropping.
Wilshire - the future of England, real quality and will be an England regular for the next decade and half
Milner - the Man City move hasn't done him any favours, not managed to live up to the heights of the last 2 seasons at Villa
Adam Johnson - Again, not another regular at club level, a talented player, but maybe more of an impact player, plays more as a winger so not direct competition for JB
Jordan Henderson - Another with a great future for England, has been very good at club level but internationals seemed a step too soon when he played in the last game, perhaps another season or 2 away for him yet, JB should be ahead of him.
So, i'd say yes he probably should be in the squad based on form, i think hes worthy ahead of probably 3 of the above players...
