Average suburban house with narrowish garden. I'm looking to replace the fence and would like to use 750mm spikes with a 6 foot fence:

Is it going to be strong enough with spikes or do I have no choice but to cement the fence?

Anyone put up a 6 foot fence with spikes that's still standing true?

For a six foot fence I would use 4 x 4 posts 8ft long and concreted in place with bags of mix. Spikes tend to waffle about in the wind.

Mine is only 5ft in lots of top soil so it's spikes in concrete, not the concreting in ones. I don't want to have them rot in 10-15 years. I also apply heavy creocote round the socket every few years even though the wood is out of the ground

Our back garden is surrounded by 6x6 fence panels using posts and spikes and ours are still standing vertical and we get some very strong side winds here.

Been up now for over a year.

If you're using fence panels, just used slotted concrete posts, 2 foot in the ground, pack with earth or concrete, doesn't matter unless the ground is ridiculously loose. Avoid spikes, so many reasons.....

I have concrete I posts and concrete gravel boards at the bottom and cemented in place.

The 6ft panels not slot in and out for painting, replacement etc.

I got fed up with putting the old wooden post one back up every time we had high winds.

They are ok for a quick fix, but the will wobble in the wind.

I have about 100ft of piked fence and its ok, but all of the posts are loose. probably been in 8 years now

As others have said - get slotted concrete posts.

Just to ressurect this thread I am im a similar situation but with a much smaller fence.

Probably about 3 foot high and 'picket' style (I.E wind can pass through)

I was going to use spikes but not sure now, what do you think?

For a 3 foot picket I would use wooden posts concreted in. Will last a long time especially if you paint bitumen where it meets the dirt. It needs to look nice as well with it being a picket. IMHO the stakes suck. Good for a quick fix if selling that's all.

Great thanks

So what size / thickness of post would you recommend?

As TheD says above, 4x4" posts and use a concrete mix, none of that metpost rubbish.

For a 3' fence, I'd dig the hole 18". So ~5" post.
