This is an interesting take on the timing belt issue.

It's for a 928 but is probably valid for the 944 too, and this is why I'm posting this. I need your review and comments, especially you guys who are familiar with the belt tension characteristics.

Look at this link, download the short WAV file, listen, and then give me your input. Note the accuracy check with Porsche instruments.

I'm not too familiar with the timing belt thing. But I would like to know what the recommended belt changing interval is in terms of time as well as mileage...the reason being my 928 has been off the road for a while, so I'm thinking of changing the belt even though it's only been a few thousand miles at most since it was last changed.

Dan,

Porsche recommends it at 60K or 5 years, which ever comes first. Having experienced a catastrophic failure on my car after 3K I would recommend 36K or 3 years, which ever comes sooner. Also check the cam belt rollers and replace any showing wear. Check the cam belt tensioner and rebuild every 100K miles.

You might want to change your water pump too. It cost £115 + VAT and Dr. Anderson has many in his 928 clinic in Stroud.

Deffective workmanship on the belt... Severed cleanly... It was 2 years old and the car had only done 3K in that time. Thought I was safe, caned it on the way to France and it broke at 120mph on the testrack to Dover. Pistons met valves and several Ks later I had a top end rebuilt and other little jobbies to make it into a perfect sleeper S2 pushing out more that an S4 ...
