I have a 156 2.4JTD. It is a W Reg, with squillions of miles, it is on its 2nd Turbo and it has a bit of a hesitancy problem.

If you drive it gently it is fine, tourquey, you can feel and Hear the turbo Spooling up. However if you wish to press on a little and put your foot down the umpf builds till about 2800 revs and then sort of peters out, It still accelerates however with a lot less vigure then it was promising with its initial urge.

I wondered if there was something blocking the Airbox and strangling the engine so I pulled the pipe off the airbox and drove it down the road like that to see if it would impove. This made it 10 times worse and amplified the problem greatly. It isn't doing very good mpg at the moment either. Do you think it could be a problem with the ecu cutting the fuel? has anyone else had this problem?

I am a bit stumped and am trying to avoid writing Alfa a Blank cheque to get it sorted.

I need to find a good ALfa specialist in the Basingstoke, Winchester, Andover, Salisbury area does anyone know of any? The Main dealers are not very hot (from my experience of the one in Basingstoke)

Agreed - the one in Basingstoke is the pits.

SGT in Taplow would be the main dealer that I would recommend - well worth the trip - if anything just to see the Scoobys, Loti and Morgans (as well as the Alfas too).

Well known and well respected (see some of the threads here).

As for indie garages - pass - sorry no idea.

Hi, I'm experiencing exactly the same problem. I get three hesitations from 2800-3200 and am only getting 32mpg!!! Mine is a V reg with 32k on it.

I think it's the AFM but the workshop reckon they've tested it.....although I know they can give good readings when tested but still be at fault. I'm waiting for a call from them, they've supposedly been on to the tech guys after notbeing able to sort it themsleves.....will let you know.

Brilliant thanks for that, mine is a w reg so they are a similar age although it has done a fair bit more than 32k miles. It could well be the fuel pump if you really boot it in the first two gears you do get a large(er than normal) puff of black smoke from the exhaust. My understanding is that this is because there is not enough fuel being burnt ie like a fuel cut.

The reason I thought it might be the mangement widget is because when I took the inlet pipe of the airbox it definately cut the fuel then and it felt similar (although worse) to what was happening anyway (it wouldn't cut until the turbo had spooled up)

Edited to say I would guess at it being around 30mpg for mine as well

Hi, sorry for the late response. Got my JTD back today, they confirmed they have cleaned the fuel pump which cured 99% of the problem. Also (lo and behold!!!) they found the Air Flow Meter was faulty, they stuck another one on and it drives like a dream now...that was the other 1% according to them, yeah right!

So, check the AFM and fuel pump, my money is still on the AFM as this causes problems with most modern cars....good luck with yours

(edited to read PUMP not FILTER...doh!)

Buy that man a pint, hurrah.

I think I will be getting them to check the AFM then, I was begining to think that it was likely to be something hugely expensive.

Are Air flow meters expensive? Might be a silly questions (please be gentle this is my first Alfa I always had BMW's before )

....off the top of me head, about £200 but can check for ya

btw.....took her out for a long drive tonight and the car is transformed, it is now quicker off the mark and has bags more immediate torque. Before I had to wait for the turbo to spool up and decide what to do....totally different now, I actually enjoy driving it and may even find it's as much fun as my 155 V6 ...one day

Will get back with the AFM price asap.

Sorry, couldn't find the price on me disc Please note the edit in my post when I got the car back, try having the fuel PUMP cleaned as they reckoned that was most of the problem, also looked like they had a service bulletin about it but didn't get a proper look.

Bosch air flow meter for 2.0 Twin Spark is £140 + VAT.
Can't see JTD one being much different...

It's a German made part, that's why it breaks down!
