Bought a 320D SE a month or so ago.

Fantastic to drive but not achieving anywhere near the MPG I thought I would.

Averaging about 40 with a mixture of town and motorway driving - is that normal?

Depends if it is the 163bhp car or the 178bhp one.

I would say that 40mpg for the 163 is about right, where as the 178 will see around 20% more.

Also, depends on your driving, when you say around town, how long is that? Which town?
Motorway? what speed? sit at 70mph and you will see nearly 50mpg, sit at 60mph and it will be mid 50s, sit at 75 and you will see 45, sit at 80 and it will be more like 40.
Do you bury the thottle at roundabouts, leaving lights etc.??

A good test for what the car is like is get behind some old boy in a Rover, reset you OBC and follow him for 20 miles, if you don't die of boredom by the time you get there have a look at the figures and see how they compare to normal.

Completely depends on the driving you do. My 330d has been averaging 34.5 and is quoted as 40 combined I think. On mainly a motorway journey I get 44-46. Just so happens I live in town wink
