With all these mass deaths of animals and other environmental events

Could the Mayans be right in ending their calender in 2012?

No and No

The way they recorded numbers/dates means it would have just ran out this year.. Was it the end of the world when the old style car numberplate system ran out?? No, we just changed it. It happens all the time. (see ip addresses now going to ipv6 addresses etc)

And there is no 'Argument' or 'Controversy'.

The Mayan calendar no more ends in 2012 than ours does on the 31st of December. A new 'great cycle' begins, that is all.

Damn right they are right and it ends, as I understand it it ticks over again much as our calendar does and starts anew. Life as normal. World turns and the sun comes up and goes down as normal and water stays wet. The rest is added by tin foil hatters and other loons that believe anything they are told.
