I thought as we are approaching the time when the new cars will all be unveiled we could have a thread dedicated to it. I always look forward to seeing what all the new cars look like, so post any rumours, spy shots, official pictures and press releases here!

As long as there isn't a thread for this already!

Looks like most teams will be launching at the end of this month/ beginning of february; shortly before first testing begins at valencia, then at jerez.

Group Lotus (Renault Lotus) will be in black and gold.
Team Lotus (Lotus Renault) will remain the same; green and yellow.

It'll be interesting to see how RB work around their fixed-flexible front wing, McLaren without the RW80 and whether Mercedes will keep the twin airbox (split airbox if you like.

Tad early for this thread though - another 10 days or so before they start appearing.

A good source for the unavailing would be f1fanatic.com
Excellent website, good fanbase and seemed to be quicker with the news than pitpass.com - all imo, of course wink

I shall don thee my pedantic mask:

The "other" team is therefore neither Lotus nor Renault, since the majority holding company of "Renault" was Genii Capital.
Group Lotus have purchased the majority stake, and so are infact in F1 - albeit with the likes of a title sponsor as opposed to the complete team; such as Team Lotus.

Ergo, my original post was correct using my naming convention of (tongue-in-cheek):

Lotus Renault (Team Lotus - using the Renault Engine.)
Renault Lotus (Group Lotus - being the majority stakeholder and team owner, also using the Renault engine.)

Now, are we still going to have a BMW Sauber Ferrari? biggrin

The merc twin airbox is banned in the new regs, so it will be more 'normal' now

with regards to BMW Sauber Ferrari, no, its just sauber ferrari now. I had the hardest time trying to explain BMW SAUBER FERRARI to a visiting american, so much so he asked if he could soon get a bmw ferrari edition :s

Banned?

For the love of god, why?
Wyy do the FIA/ WMSC continue banning all new inventions and innovations?

Can we just stop regulating to such a degree and allow designers to erm.. design, and not follow the rules as if it were some sort of paint by numbers.

Good grief, it won't be long until F1 replicates the basis of A1 GP where only the livery, drivers and a few tweaks to the cars set the grid apart.

something to do with new crash regs i think, the shark fins and the double hoop are both outlawed. oddly enough though, the shark fins are mandatory in lmp class this year DUE to safety

im also worried about the possibility of going down this route, however from these stifling rules came the double diffuser and the f duct so i'm pretty certain we will see further innovation/rule bending this year

Unfortunately, that is the problem.

The current flock of designers are painting outside the numbers - which for the fans, is brilliant.
As mentioned; the shark fin, f-duct (rw80), double diffuser, split air box etc are brilliant ideas.

However.... they then get banned!

If the other teams had figured out and natured the design concept of the double diffuser, the rw80 etc - would they have been banned?

I struggle to understand the current ethos of a standardised formula.
F1 has not and, should not be standardised.

If all the cars were painted white - we need to be able to tell the difference. Currently this can be done for a few teams.
Slowly but surely however, I do believe we'll lose that.

F duct and double diffuser I can kind of understand because its an advantage to one team that the others have in downforce and straight line speed. But does the split airbox and shark fin really affect performance that much?

AJP - I think the double diffuser was banned, because the original concept was to make the cars slower / less downforce available at the rear (other than wing). The original rules were touted as a way to make the teams run more wing, giving a better slipstream effect, better racing / slower times etc etc.

The sharks fin I can't get - I thought that it added stability. However, since F1 engineers are a clever bunch, maybe it was introduced to make sure that there are no 3rd wing / f duct / whatever comes next opportunities for the designers to use?

As for the double intake, I can see how it is "dangerous" - in that the dsign shows a "blade" 1" wide to say, grass or a gravel trap as a roll over hoop device. One can inagine that if 2 cars were unlucky enough to flip and go forwards into soft mud, that the Merc design would make the "roll hoop" less effecitve, by cutting into the deck and making the ground closer to the drivers head. Of course, having not tried it, I'm not sure if my guess is any more watertight than a lotus roof*, so please don't shoot me if I'm wrong!

See what I did there? Bymaking reference to Lotus, we can discuss Renault again

A bit more on it. I think the reason all of the "fancy stuff" on the airbox/fin has been removed is to reduce the possibility of someone coming up with another F-Duct type solution to do something strange/naughty to the moveable rear wing.
