Hi

Moved into a new house a few months ago - its got a new boiler and programmer and all the radiators have thermostatic valves. There doesnt seem to be a room thermostat anywhere in the house though. Is this normal? It worries me because I assume that without a room thermostat the boiler will never switch off. Is this right? Thanks

That used to be a common set up. The pump will run all the time the programmer asks it to, with the central heating water temp controlled by the boiler thermostat. As the house comes up to temp, the TRVs will close and the boiler will only cycle on for short periods.

Some people who like warm houses and don't care about gas bills do seem to prefer this set up, however building regs for quite a while have said that a room thermostat must be fitted. Is the house new, or just new to you?

Most recent combi installations don't have a programmer at all. The CH is just "on" all the time, with the temperature being controlled by a programmable thermostat. When the thermostat is satisified, it shuts everything off.

This.

Its bloody annoying though, as our boiler fires up every 5 minutes to keep hot water cycling around the rads.

My advice is to add a room stat if you can, it is way more controllable and will save you money! Try and go for a fully programmable room stat, one where you can vary the temperature for different times of the day.

Install it in a room you use, the lounge is preferable, however you must make sure you leave the TRVs on full where the room stat is installed, or remove them if possible.
