Redundancy pay

Is statutory redundancy pay the norm, or is it common to get more? A friend is miffed at 'only' getting statutory from his last job and now there are rumours of redundancies at his present place (large retailer) he reckons he'll probably get more.

Is he just a hopeless optimist? My job isn't looking terribly secure so I'm interested.

It does seem to be the norm these days, from an employers POV why pay more that you have too.
