What's the average BHP that's being delivered now on a totally new engine with a super charger?

What size engine? what super charger?

Not confined by standard TVR sizes as this would be a completely new build from scratch. Just wondering how close you can get to 500 bhp on a Rover block and still be useable and reliable.

It would be a very expensive, and largely pointless, exercise IMHO
And I don't reckon you'd get that close

Shirley it would be a pointless exercise when you could get a LS to that bhp relatively easily.

But for the record, i have seen a RV8 that delivered i think 1200bhp or maybe it was 2000bhp - it was on a drag car and had been substantially changed, eg no water cooling jacket its cooled by the fuel, according to the builder who I chatted to it needs a strip down and a rebuild after a few runs. It was at the autosport show 3 years ago. Didn't look much like a Rover V8 anymore

For a blower + RV8 to make 500 bhp I'd have thought you'd need a 5.x motor suitably built with low compression and strong bits with SC-power's biggest kit (with intercooler). Costs a few quid though...!

I agree, you'd spend a fortune on the RV8 and probably still not have the power, reliability and driveability of an LS that would cost you less off the shelf.

The proplem is finding a rolling road they don't slip on...i've been on 3 different ones and it has slipped on every one of them as have 2 other cars i know of...And mine is only pushing out around 450-460 bhp.
Perfectly driveable tho, been driving it all winter. Even drove it down to Dulfords the week before xmas in a snow blizzard for its 1k running in service...I did bottle it and take the R888's off for the winter tho (but the roof stayed off, Ask Richard...lol)

Hamish, why not just take it somewhere with a hub dyno??

Talk to John Eales. He and I worked on the 5.2 supercharged set up that I have in the Wedge. First run on the dyno was 497 bhp. Running over 540 for a couple of years but planning for more with a new charge cooler/plenum set up.

It is not cheap and neither is the rest of the engineering needed for the rest of the car to stop it breaking things like gearboxes.

Yep, the plan is to px the charger for the new bigger C38-91 unit later this year, if funds allow (may have to go aftermarket with the ecu tho, as I have maxxed out the 14CUX's resolution) and then put it on a hub dyno.

I doubt there is much argument there.

This exercise isn't for a TVR but another Rangie project I'm embarking on. biggrin

All new and suitable running gear, brakes drive shafts, diffs, boxes etc.

The current intention is a worked XKR system which would hit 450 easily.

However, I'm interested in exploring whether the RV8 could reach this level as easily etc.

My current level of thinking is probably not and I am probably more keen on the more modern engine.

Also, I think people know my view on LS engines. biggrin

Which, at least in the case of the RV8 cars, is more than offset by the cost of rebuilding the car around your 'cheap' LS engine. Pennywise & poundfoolish spring to mind....

If I was to embark my power build again with hindsight, I would have gone down the LSx route! and I would have had money left over afterwards(a considerable amount of it too frown)

What, you mean you spent well in excess of 15-18 grand (which IIRC is what it cost Jon Ellison to proprly engineer a box stock LS into a Chimaera, with him and his Dad doing a lot of work between themselves...)?

I wouldn't push that point too much. IIRC it was very considerably more than that, maybe twice that!

Thanks.

TVR Power seem to getting similar figs with their 5.x SC.

It's a question of useability etc as it's not for a drag racer and will run via an auto box.

The Jag AJ V8 is almost certainly the better route for this project but it has to be worth exploring the RV8 angle as it would be cheaper on paper at least.

Its easy to spend more than 15k just building an N/A rover v8 never mind blowing it as well. IIRC retail on Throttle bodies, manifolds, linkages, trumpets, airbox, filters fuel rail, injectors and ecu alone was around 5k same price as a stock ls!!!
