Unfortunately you can't download the phonebook onto a C-Class COMAND system, the only thing you can do is send the system 'business cards', but an iPhone isn't capable of this! Your only option is to put your sim-card in another phone, pair that and send the contacts across!
To get it to pair, you need to go to options on the phone menu and highlight external authorisation, then search for the car from the iPhone.

Correct, you have to have the telephone pre-wire option and the cradle to do upload contacts....the cradle pairs with the phone and downloads the contacts onto the Comand system.
Once the contacts are loaded you don't actually need to use the cradle again unless you want to charge the phone or upload new contacts at a later date.
I don't think they do an iPhone 4 cradle yet but they definitely have one for the 3G/S - you can use this cradle for the 4 for uploading contacts as although the phone doesn't fit in it perfectly, it fits enough for contact be made.
If you don't have the pre-wire or cradle then I'm afraid its bad news - you'll have to enter all your contact details in manually.

I exported my contacts from Outlook as .vcf files. There are a few different ways to do this. What I did was select all my contacts then send them as business cards and they appeared as attachments in an email that I was then able to copy to the root of an SD card. There may be a slicker way of doing this.......
