Audi retains top brand status

Audi ended another year as the top luxury brand in Europe in 2010. Mercedes-Benz, on the other hand, was not so lucky. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer lost its second place to Munich’s BMW.
According to Bloomberg, the European industry association ACEA revealed that new registrations for BMW rose 6.5 percent in 2010, the fastest among the three brands.
However, BMW’s sales total of 609 196 wasn’t enough to challenge Audi’s 623 536. Mercedes-Benz moved 586 146 units in 2010.
BIGGEST GLOBALLY
Audi has previously stated it wants to unseat BMW as the top global luxury brand by 2015.
It is said that a more positive economic outlook and the restocking of corporate fleets added to Europe's renewed interest in luxury cars in 2010.
BMW deliveries on the continent were boosted by the revamped 5 Series, while Audi’s new A7 Sportback and A1 hatch drove sales for Ingolstadt.
Mercedes’ 0.1 percent decline was attributed mainly to buyers waiting for the introduction of the facelifted C-Class range.
Citigroup forecasts that car sales in western Europe will fall by 2.3 percent to 12.7 million units in 2011.
