Big Holiday Cottage in North Devon/Cornwall

Trying to organise a mates stag do and am having a bit of a nightmare finding somewhere within striking distance of a decent town for nights out and beaches for surfing thats not a ghetto 'surf lodge' (aka, hostel/prison). We're all 30+ and I'd like to think responsible - does anyone have any ideas of where to look or reccommendations?
