Well done UK government. Not a single replacement power station. Great planning!

I think you could have made that more dramatic...

"Ah, but we have...........<da da daaaaaa> WINDMILLS"

Anyway, I'm relaibly informed that there are some missing from N Korea and Myanmar.

I'm seriously hoping that all this windymill stuff is a big joke that's going to go away. Are *any* new powerstations (coal, gas, hydro, whatever) currently being built? What's the shelf life of the current crop? Are we screwed?

I know. Sizewell C has been 'in the wings' for many years.
What makes me laugh is the council is trying to wangle it so that as part of the building programme they also upgrade to the A12 as well.

Although if you use this link: http://world-nuclear.org/NuclearDatabase/rdResults...

It does say some are planned(rolleyes) but look at that compared to those shut down.

Each successive Government promises them, but NEVER delivers.

Very interesting link BTW thumbup

That's actually quite amusing wink

I meant nuclear powerstations missing from the map...

It's happening chaps don't worry. The final phase of the generic design assessment process is currently being carried out for the AP1000 (Westinghouse design) and the EPR (EDF/AREVA design). Next phase is local planning and there are several site earmarked. http://hinkleypoint.edfenergyconsultation.info/

wow. India going a bit crazy!! dont blame them though!

its a shame there's so many people who dont realise what knock-on effect this will have in years to come and by the time they do we'll have to get the chinese in to build them.

Developed in great secrecy by Saddam Hussein's regime, WMD gave rise to the second Iraq war.

Interesting views here from Paul Lavelle. Stick with it.

Some great interviews in this series.

Brian Cox, Ben Goldacre and Richard Noble are particularly good.

I had a Westinghouse fridge and the door hinges rusted off. Their reactors are bound to be better, right?

We were talking about AP1000s when I last had involvement in the Industry, 10 years ago and they still haven't built any. I can't help thinking there should be a better design by now?

The problem with nuclear technology is one of the biggest costs is not in building the thing, but justifying that it will do what you think it will under all reasonably foreseeable circumstances. Thus, it is in the interest of the design authority to use technology that is very very well proven and understood.

Use new or novel technology and you have to start from first principles when it comes to verification and validation - in some cases you even have to invent new ways to test the thing before you can test it. It can get VERY expensive. The engineering adage KISS is very apt when it comes to NPPs. Many of the gen III designs have focussed on removing a lot of the complexity of the gen II designs.

There have been a lot of clever design emerge since you probably last looked, but the gap between the theory and the practicality of building one of these gen IV designs is massive.
