All the pontificating and electioneering and here we are 8 months into the Coalition and the Conservatives propose major restructuring of the NHS. This, in the face of those pledges, that the NHS 'is safe in our hands' no restructuring, ring fenced funding. Simply in your face blatant lies, whichever Political Party you support or not this is shameful, no wonder over half the electorate are so turned off politics.

This.

Labour knew exactly what they were doing, the coniving bds.

The Coalition hasn't a bloody clue what they are doing.

And this is why coalitions usually never work.
This one will not last anywhere near a full term.

I don't believe the Conservatives said they would keep the NHS as it is, did they? They said they would protect funding, but it's clear reorganisation is required.

That said, I'm not sure they are going about the re-org in the right way, it seems to have been introduced rather quickly with a lack of consultation, and I can see more 'postcode lotteries' with this new system.

You know what.......GOOD!!!!! This is one promise I'm glad they are breaking!

The NHS is the single biggest 'sink hole' for public funds at the moment, and most of that wastage goes on the bureaucracy behind running it!

It needs streamlining, and that will only happen through massive reform.

I don't know how it will be done...hopefully there are far smarter people than myself looking at this......but it needs doing if we're serious about trying to scale back the deficit, and eventually the debt!

The NHS needs a good reorganisation to become more efficient and less wasteful....however I cannot see any of the parties achieving this as they're more interested in re-election than doing what needs to be done.

What's this about?

The NHS has set aside £1.7bn for reform and reorganisation, more than seven times the amount it aims to save.

I am not sure the NHS can ever be reorganised effectively, healthcare is just too expensive nowadays to be provided free for everyone. We need some honesty in the debate and recognition that people should have to buy healthcare insurance to cover part of the costs of hospital stays and drug treatments.

Some treatments should not be provided on the NHS (IVF, sex change surgery etc).

The NHS is a financial black hole and the PFI hospitals drain huge amounts of money away.

I think what the conservatives actually said was that financing the NHS was ring fenced, and that there would be no top-down reorganisation of the service.
As I understand it, the first promise holds true, (although no doubt Labour will nit pick the figures if there is so much as an interpretive shillings worth of short fall to jump up and down about) It is an interesting question that the OP raises though as to whether this change in the organisation represents a top down reorganisation.. As far as I can see it looks more like a "from the bottom up" reorganisation. I'm not trying to be funny, but it does strike me that this could be in line with the wording of the promise, although I'm in no doubt that many (most) will see it as being at odds with the spirit of the promise.
The bigger question is "why do it?" As uk political poisin challices (sp?) go there is nothing bigger than the NHS. Third largest employer in the world after the Chinese army and somebody elses postal service as far as I remember - and that statistic alone tells you all you need to know.. We simply cannot afford it in its current form. Moreover we simply cannot afford it to be as resolutely CRAP as it is in so many ways. Filthy hospitals which kill more patients through hospital caught infections than are killed on the roads each year, cancer survival rates amongst the lowest of any western country and other stats relating to stroke, heart attack and general public health that frankly should embarrass any nation let alone onbe which spends so much and employs so many in the pursuit of universal health care.
The system needs changing, and not just tinkering with the deck chairs as just about every government over the last 30 years has done. Maybe, just maybe, this approach, with its focus on putting responsibility for decision making, patient care outcomes and budgets in the care of clinicsions (sp) is the first step back along the now well travelled path to ruination that the NHS is currently and most surely on. We simply HAVE to get back to £1 worth of care for each £1 spent in the NHS, and that care needs to be focussed on the genuinely needy, and on improving the nations health. I'm sick of endless meetings for NHS managers (we actually have more NHS managers now than we have beds in the system for them to manage) In the last 3 months I have stayed in several large hotels and in each one there was a large NHS conference of some sort going on - lots of people staying in VERY nice hotels on 3 meals + snacks and coffees to discuss god knows what for days at a time. It has to stop! Huge levels of beaurocracy and waste which stifle attempts to make a real difference to patient outcomes and which simply absorb massive amounts of cash have to be done away with.
I have to hope that this approach to the NHS by the conservatives will work, not just because we need it to from an economic stand point, but most importantly because lives are being lost and will continue to be lost because of the st way things are being done today. Change has to come. I hope the left + the unions will recognise the need for this and work hard to make it work for the patient. If they sabotage it, then they will surely have blood on their hands

I think compulsory health insurance with a minimum level of service would be an excellent idea. If health providers had to compete to provide service I think you would see a lot more innovation.

I'm not sure how the governments current idea of giving more power to GPs is a brilliant idea. I've generally found my GP to be difficult to get a hold of and offering very little in the way of innovation. Unless the idea is that at some point the GPs become responsible for funding themselves and turn into private medical providers.

The NHS is a series of precision made high quality parts but unfortunately from different machines that don't work together.

The whole thing needs redesigning and the purpose of the machine defining and sticking to.
