Thought I'd have a little tidy up and buy some nice new cables for my system and maybe get rid of some of those nasty big scart cables. So I ordered:

1. HDMI for Sky+ to TV
2. HDMI for PS3 to TV
3. Optical cable from TV to amp

So, 2 was fine but the Sky+ has not HDMI out and my amp no optical in!!

What a div, should have checked shouldn't I although I'm pretty surprised to be honest!

Suprised at the amp not having optical, it must be quite a basic one. Sky+ was invented before HDMI was even thought about, no suprise there.

I have the same amp. Got some RCA leads from my Sky+ HD to the amp and used the PS3 component cable to plug into the amp with the HDMI cable connecting the PS3 to the TV. Job done!

That's more or less how I've done it, I just have a nice shiney new HDMI and optical cables I can't use!

I should have made myself more clear. You haven't wasted the HDMI cable.

I've connected my PS3 HDMI to HDMI tv for the picture and tv sound.

I've also used the component cable to connect the 2nd HDMI socket to the RCA inputs on my amp for when I want the PS3 sound through the speakers.

The ps3 allows you to send sound through both cables.

You've only wasted money on the optical cable which I'm sure you can ebay!

Not so sure on that, i think it depends on the amp too, and if its a rather old amp then there may be problems.

I could not, for love nor money, get my PS3 sound through the HDMI, so had to use an optical cable.

If there is a way, regardless of amp, please do tell

Right, I'm no technical genius, far from it in fact. But here's what I've done with my PS3.

1. HDMI cable from PS3 to TV.
2. Component cable from PS3 to RCA on Amp, leaving the video (yellow) part unplugged.
3. Go to sound settings on PS3 and there's a setting that allows you to have sound outputted through both (google was my friend here).
4. I can now have PS3 sound from the TV or from the amp and speakers depending on which one I turn on/mute.

Right, so I can get a HD box and use my standard card in it but just not receive the sky HD channels?

Yup, I paid £15 for a "free" box..and signed upto sky HD...pretty straight fwd swap from Sky+ to Sky HD, same card, aerial and cables, just need to give them a call to pair/activate once its all setup...works pretty well and the HD channels looks pretty crisp...!

You could give em a call and see what they'll do for you in terms of not getting the HD package if you don't need yet...or try and wrangle some other offer.
