SL55 AMG - wow!
Discussion
The Mercedes SL55 AMG is one hell of a car... after reading this blurb... I'm major tempted...
A quick touch of the accelerator is all it takes to feel and experience this power. At a mere 1500 rpm, the driver can elicit no less than 500 Newton metres of torque from the V8 engine, rising to 650 Newton metres at 2000 rpm and 690 Newton metres at 2500 rpm. The rev counter still only displays 2650 rpm when maximum torque is reached: a massive 700 Newton metres.
The impressive power development in the eight-cylinder engine is largely down to a newly developed mechanical supercharger enthroned between the cylinder banks. It works on the principle of a Lysholm compressor and ensures about 30 percent more charge pressure than comparable, mechanical supercharging systems. The maximum charge pressure is 0.8 bar. The engine management unit calculates whether to use the scroll compressor depending on the engine speed and load. With lightning speed, the electronic system controls an electromagnetic clutch which drives the compressor by means of a separate poly-V-belt. The advantage of this direct link to the crankshaft is that the supercharger can spontaneously react when the driver presses the accelerator and provide powerful thrust at an engine speed barely above idle.
So without the limiter set to 155mph, whats the actual real top speed of this beauty... any ideas?

Weighs something like 1.8tonnes but its such a seriously good car.
Do some searches on M5board.com for Lonman's SL55 exploits. He's the Gumball madman and has used the SL55 a lot. He rates it as good as his GT2 for acceleration stuff.
It's a seriously good car!!! Leathers are a bit shite though.

OH
Very nice indeed
It's on my list of fantasy cars. Saw a dark blue one today driving through my village with his top off too and a bit later on a red Ferrari, a red Lotus and a silver Porsche...
Nothing tops Trev tho!

wow how did the merc get on top of the ferrari?
i think i'd rather have the SL600. same power, shed loads more torque and a bit more stealth.oh and the chance to have the brabus 640bhp upgrade!

Hi all,
I work for the ultimate boss, his car collection is (I believe) second to nonn (F40, Murcielago, 360, 996 Turbo etc), but even he has managed to lose control of his SL55 due to the torque.
It may be he bought it for the girlfriend, but what a beast it is (the car, not the girlfriend). Probably the most underated car there is.

Seconded on the underated statement. This car is one serious peice of technical marvelry, I mean the electronic convertible hardtop, the all out luxury interior options (I heard even a massaging seat option???) yet the feel and power of a real sportscar, not to mention its times which shame quite a few exotics with larger engines and lighter bodyweight... I wander how good a reflex purple one would look with purple/cream interior colour combination.... mmmm....
full of technical marvel that even merc garage's cant always fix plus you will still be getting water leaks in the boot very nice though, but beware these cars are very complicated electrically having 2 batterys and electronic brakes/ the pedal isnt attached to the master cylinder, and with over 27 control units in the car with an avereage price of over £1500 squid a unit good luck when the warranty runs out also the suspension struts are well over £1000 each and you cant do anything to the car without a star machine/laptop, you cant even bleed the brakes without it and youll be needing a supercharger belt almost every service.
nice touches are if you hold the brake pedal down at the traffic lights it will hold the brakes on untill you hit the gas - sbc hold, also if you operate the cruise button in a certain direction below 30mph when you let off the throttle the car will gently brake to a stop on its own - sbc stop, but beware all this technology is hurrendous when it goes tits up,
generally we have trouble with all the electronic systems in the car so beware !
it is a great car though all the same
