Found this on another site, the NASA AD-1.



Haven't seen it before on other strange plane threads.

Why is a rotating oblique wing better for drag and fuel economy than a variable angle wing plane like the F-14? I assume it was better, in theory at least, given that it came about after the F-14 entered service.

Burt Rutan is an amazing designer, but I bet his nightmares are rather vivid.

Ah, the good old Hansajet. One of those went off the end runway at Blackpool and crashed into a holiday camp.

The NASA swing wing thing I *think* was an experiment into variable sweep wings but minimising the complexity and associated weight. Instead of all the complexities of normal swing-wing, they just tacked the wing on with a nail in the middle. Job done.
