Promotions on new 5.0 RRS and RR?
Discussion
Morning ladies and gents.
My Dad has been on the hunt for a second hand 5 litre RR or RRS to replace our 4.2, but we've been struggling find one that is a suitable colour combo, mileage and price.
We're in no hurry to exchange ours, so I've just been telling Dad to wait for the right one. Now, though, even I'm beginning to think it's not out there. The majority of the slim 5.0 litre pickings appear to white or black, and have black interiors. Personally, I like Bali Blue, but Mum's given that a "thumbs down".
Family discussions have resulted in one colour "choice"....Stornoway Grey with full cream interior. Our 4.2 is Bonatti Grey with cream, and I have to admit it's been a doddle to keep looking clean - hides dirty really well
After the poor success at 2nd hand shopping, Dad recently checked out the Promotions page on the Land Rover UK website - RR Sport page HERE
A 2 year, 0% APR Finance deal on brand new 5.0 RR Sports and RR's. Dad's tempted, and it seems pretty darn to good me, too. He understands that we can spec a car to our tastes and can even part ex our car against the first payment, which is helpful.
So to my questions.
Has anyone here taken advantage of these latest offers? Are they as good as they sound?
Does anyone know what the depreciation of the vehicles would be after that two year period?
On a more basic note, we've lived with our Sport for almost 4 years now, and it's been a great daily driver for my parents, and I've found it a joy to drive in the few thousand miles I've completed. Despite the odd problem, it's been largely reliable, very comfortable, with excellent performance for such a hefty vehicle.
We don't particularly care for the "it's not a proper Range Rover" argument, but Dad has mentioned getting a full-fat RR.
So to my further questions.
Is the RR noticeably more luxurious than a Sport? I know the prefacelift RR interior appears to be a better quality the early Sports, but the new interior of the facelift Sport is much improved!
How does RR handling compare to that of a Sport?
Do you get any more toys in a RR, over and above those in a Sport?
Basically, image aside, is it worth potentially trading a bit of handling for (maybe) some extra luxury. It might be worth noting, we haven't been left wanting for toys with our current car
Many thanks in advance,
Darren

Latest offers - nope not taken advantage
Depreciation - my FFRR S/C retailed with options c.£80k, I bought at 36k at 2.5 years old
RR is much more luxurious and a supremely better place to be. Less car cockpit more gin palace/gentleman's club

Handling - it's not a sports car. Serene comfort although S/Cs do have reasonable good handling (read amazing handling for the size and height!) You'll only know if you get on with it by driving it. Doubt you'd be that concerned as it definitely wouldn't detract from the overall experience.
More Toys - oh my god yes!! :-)
All in all you can't *really* compared the two - the RRS is a supremely good vehicle in it's own right but the two in no way really compete - the only place they would is off-road where the RRS is far more competent that it's "footballer" image (which may be disappearing now as other cars have caught up with the inyerface styling) would convey. Which is better?
FFRR all the way!!!! :-D

Darren
I recently bought a TDV8 RR Vogue SE with every option available at 3 years old and 18k miles from a main dealer with 12 months warranty for 50% of the new price. The equivalent 3-year old SC was around 40% of new price. Does anyone know what the depreciation of the vehicles would be after that two year period?
Darren
In 2008 I bought a 3-year old SC at 20k miles for less than 40% of the new price. The equivalent TDV8 was £10k more at the time. It's much the same now in % terms.
I was also offered the 0% 2-year deal when buying my latest used TDV8 and decided that my deposit would be largely lost in depreciation within the 2 years. So I had a choice, put the same amount in to a 0% deal for a new RR and be left with virtually zero capital after 2 years or buy an immaculate low mileage 3-year old example with more kit than a new one and be left with around 50% of my capital after 2 years.
As always the choice depends on how important a new vehicle is to you and how much you are prepared to spend on depreciation. The SC is a great RR but the TDV8 is more than satisfying for 99% of situations but depreciates signifcantly less. If you buy a new one then expect 50% depreciation as a trade-in after 2 years, a bit less depreciation if you sell privately. If you buy one that's depreciated somewhat already it will cost less in the longer term. If depreciation doesn't matter then ignore all of the above. Simples.
Main thing is to enjoy whatever you buy and forget the costs

Deffo get the 4.4 diesel. I'm sure money isn't a huge issue, but any savings you make buying a petrol SC will disappear into insignificance compared to running (petrol _+ depreciation) the thing.
Even from a practical point of view - how long do you want to spent in petrol stations?
I'd be wanting a signifcant lotto win before ordering the petrol one. The sheer bonkers performance appeals....but the running costs...!

Depends on the mileage you do. That burbling V8 is glorious and on full chat with the supercharger whine positively sublime.
Low mileage means the diesel vs petrol argument isn't really that important unless you're buying new and are paying considerable thought to resale.
Yeah. If I was buying 2-3yrs old and doing 3k miles a year, I'd be getting the petrol one Low mileage means the diesel vs petrol argument isn't really that important unless you're buying new and are paying considerable thought to resale.

Many thanks for the replies thus far, guys
Viewing this deal is the only reason for us buying new. But you guys have confirmed something I feared.
Pretty much all of your initial payment would be your depreciation.
I guess I should recommend to my Dad to wait for the right RR or RRS?
Since my OP, we've got a local dealership checking LR's stock for us.
And out LCD Sat Nav screen has decided to go on blink - think it's warning us to sell her sooner
And yes, the car won't be doing tremendous mileage, and the petrol's performance very appealing to the parents
I guess one more petrol-hungry car in the family won't make much of a difference

Bit of advice. Don't rely on one dealer to check LR's stock do it yourself, and don't just check LR online but also individual LR dealership web sites. From experience, (twice now!) even within LR dealer groups they won't transfer good stock without a fight and what you are looking for is a desirable colour spec combination. My latest RR only made it on to the local LR dealers web site and didn't make it on to the LR web site before I bought it over the phone. They will always ship it to your local LR dealer for an inspection before buying if you place a conditional deposit over the phone. You need to do some serious 'internet' leg work to get what you want at the right price. Many thanks to everyone for their informative replies
As far as depreciation vs. promotional initial payment goes, it's as I feared - your initial payment is a large chunk of the 2 year's depreciation.
After explaining this to Dad, the 2nd hand option is now, once again, the only option.
I've taken on board about searching beyond LR's main website, so thank you for that suggestion
As previously mentioned, we're in no rush to change, so we'll be waiting for the right car to come along.
For the mean time, if anyone does hear about a 5.0 SC Grey on cream car out there for sale, please PM with some details and my parents would definately like to know about them
Many thanks again guys and gals.

my local dealer has this - sand with black, looks good in the flesh though - http://www.usedvehicles.landrover.co.uk/dealer/H97...
I thought I would give a little update in this thread.
After your advice, Dad did not go ahead with this new car deal, and the search for a nearly new car continues.
The other day, my parents test drove a FFRR 5.0, and found it still too wobbly for their liking, and they said they prefer the car-like cabin of the Sport.
So now the choice is 5.0 RRS only, in grey with cream leather and non-Autobiography (Dad doesn't the two interiors or bodykits of these cars). So rather specific, but I guess they know what they like
Many thanks again to everyone for their advice, recommendations and spotting the odd car for sale

Did they try the MY11 RR? The suspension advance is huge for this year, almost no roll at all.
It was an 09-plate car. After this deal I enquired about was not what the parents first thought, we'll be going for 09-10 cars, so bearing that in mind, I guess it another RRS

I wasn't aware MY11 cars had different suspension, though. What did they do to it?

OMG!!!!
I've just looked at the RR website linked above and managed to spec up a RR for over 100K pounds.
£100,000+ !!!
Bloody hell, I didn't realise new cars were this expensive these days.
Makes my 3 years XJR at £20K seem positively cheap.
And my 10 year old RR at £2.5K seems almost free!

You can pretty nearly spec up a RRS for close on that money,to spec up a FFRR you can easily spend a lot more than that.

My builder commented that he had a Lotus Cortina that was worth more than both our cars put together.
A new Freelander2 and a new RR Autobiography Black do not cost 30k, more like 130k. Not sure what planet he was on, but he kept repeating how his car was worth more than both of ours together.....we just smiled.

Your cars may have been worth that when you drove out of the showroom but they will be worth a whole lot less now
