Subaru Impreza P1

Several of the special editions seem somewhat of a con really (22B and WR1 not included in that)... On the newages they seem to boil down to a prodrive remap and exhaust...
WR1 was just a PPP kit with a better paintjob, wheels, interior and some styling tweeks.Terzo, RB5, Catalunia, UK300 and GB270 were all more of the same thing (minus the PPP).
Agree on the 22b though.

But it has a UK wiring loom, 2 door Bodyshell, bespoke spoilers, different springs and lightly better knock sensitivy.Next..
Personally it'd be a STI-R for me rather than the P1.
I had the Japanese version of the P1 called the Type R. Same 2 door coupe bodyshell but the Japanese version has driver adjustable diff, short ratio gearbox, intercooler spray and probably a few other bits and pieces I've forgotten over the P1 but it doesn't have ABS which the P1 does. IMO the Type R is a slightly better version of the P1 but they are both great cars and the P1 has the advantage of being a UK spec car.
The only thing to look out for is that the P1 was basically a Type R converted to UK spec by Prodrive, unfortunately they didn't do a thorough job with a proper remap for UK 97 ron fuel (Japanes use 99+) so you have had quite a few engines go pop due to using lower rated fuel. If you do get a P1, make sure it's been remappaped for UK fuel or at least try to confirm the owner has used V-power or similar and also do the same going forward otherwise it could end in an expensive rebuild.

Would the same not be true of the sti though? It would be ideal to ensure both the P1 and the Type-R are correctly mapped for the fuel you wish to use.
Do you have any specific questions or after general advice?

When I had a type R 10 years ago one of the well known mappers who was remapping my own car at the time, showed me the P1 map that Ecutek had just cracked. he was amazed that it was near identical to the JDM STI5/6 100ron map apart from the slightly increase knock sensitity. (To combat the detonation on SUL)
Hence my comment about clever Prodrive marketing, for what was basically a collection of existing STI and UK parts with a few styling tweeks.
Personally, I would still have one, as apart from the 22B, they are going to be the ones that are going to increase in value in a few years time.

If you count the dccd as the good bits, which really i dont rate as highly as some seem to, the rest of the little bits really make no difference, and it is a UK car with nicer trim on the interior, much nicer alloys and abs.Next..

AUTO was first fitted to the Blobeye 2003 JDM Import.
I never played with mine either. Apart from in the snow.
Both have their pro and cons. I'd say the P1 was better suited for UK road use as the spring\dampers were changed to provide a more complaint ride and the ABS is a good feature for our damp roads. The interior is a little better on the P1 but it has air con as opposed to climate control, is only available in the one colour (sonic blue) and the brakes aren't as good.
The Type R is more hardcore, it's slightly lighter, has the quick steering rack and short ratio gearbox which is brilliant for acceleration but may get a bit tiresome if you do lots of motorway miles. The suspension is harder although I had no complaints with mine, it is based on a rally car afterall so it's not super stiff likes some modern sports cars with alot of travel in the suspension (to handle those large jumps
). It has slightly better brakes, plus the adjustable diff which might seem like a gimmick to some but I found it great fun as it could literally transform the handling of the car from safe surefooted 4wd to a*se out oversteer lunacy. The Type R is also avaiable in a great range of colours, I had one in pearlescent black which in my opinion looked brilliant and made a nice change from the usual blue with gold wheels that 99% of Impreza's seemed to come in.
Both excellent cars and IMO the pinnacle of the Impreza, yet to beaten by any which has followed, for ability, road presence, looks and Kudos courtesy of the late great Mr Mcrae. Subaru have not made another 2 door coupe since. Just pick whichever one is the best you can find for your budget. Apart from the previously mentioned fueling issue, they are very relaible. They can be a bit thirsty but I doubt you'd loose any money in depreciation on either. In fact I suspect clean, well looked after examples will start to go up in value. Good luck with the search. Do it, I still miss mine!
