would i have to remove the whole door trim to replace the door speakers on a mk 1 mx5, or could i fit new speakers only by removing the speaker grille

pleas could you describe the most pain-free way of removing the speaker grille and the door trim

What year of Mk1? And what do your door cards/speaker grilles look like?

mx-5lazza : thank-you for taking the trouble to try and help

my car is a 1993 mark 1 1.6 (114 bhp )

the door trim is soft touch plastic , but there is a separate rounded off almost square hard plastic area at the bottom forward end of the door
, within which a round speaker grille can be seen

is it possible to replace a speaker just by removeing the hard plastic portion , and if so how would one go about it ?

I haven't done it myself never having played with a 93 but I believe the speaker cover just pulls off.

Yes mate, you just pull from the corner closest to the bottom of the door at the hinge side and it just pops off.
